Do You really Need a Screen Protector?

I'd just like to know if you really need this, the GS has a different coating on their screen than the previous models. Do these protectors really work, do you need them on your GS for insurance?

In my humble opinion, you don't need one. They wouldn't have updated the glass to be smudge resistant if Apple wanted you to put a screen protector on. Using the bare glass has a better feel than the flimsy, plastic screen protectors. Also, the screen protectors are harder to keep clean compared to the new updated glass on the iPhone 3gs. You can just wipe the glass on your pant leg or shirt compared to using a screen protector and having to use a special cloth.

Hope this helps

I never had a screen protector on my 2G iPhone and the screen was still perfect after 2 years. I haven't put one on my 3GS either. You would defeat the special coating on the 3GS if you put a screen protector on it. HOWEVER, I recommend a case the protects the screen when not using the phone. Don't carry it in your pocket without such a case.

In the second day of owning my new 3G phone, I got a huge scratch right down the middle of the screen. This shocked me since I didn't know how it got there and I never got a scratch on my 2G screen in the time it didn't have a screen protector on it. I was even planning on putting a protector on it that night! Luckily that phone had other issues that warranted an exchange. The new phone got a Power Support Crystal Film put on it as soon as I got it home.

Now, I keep the phone in my pocket. No case, just a screen protector. If you keep it in a case like Lawrence says, I'd probably forego the screen protector.

A screen protector on the new 3GS would defeat the purpose of the oleophobic coating. I have tried protectors on my Palms but I prefer bare back with the iPhone. Screen protectors are a pain to apply without leaving wrinkles and bubbles and you can never replicate the smooth feel of the glass. You will also lose a little bit of screen brightness as they will never be 100% transmitting. I carry the iPhone in my pocket with the screen facing my pants leg and my wallet on top without an unsightly bulge. I don't put keys or lose change in that pocket. I agree that if you are throwing the iphone into a bag, purse, or backpack with lots of sharp objects (like your eating utensils or Bowie knife set), a slip cover might be a good idea. I bought one but it was so tight and hard to remove that I don't use it. Maybe others can suggest a good case that preserves the slimness of the iPhone.

I hate fingerprints enough that I'd rather have the matte film, though.

Honestly, with the new glass on the 3GS, it is difficult to leave fingerprints on it even if you wanted to. The new coating really makes the phone smudge proof. I never liked the screen protectors anyway, and just put up with my constantly smudged and printed iPhone. The 3GS though, is amazing in its ability to resist dirt.
