Iphone 3GS not able to charge from Scion xD Ipod connector

Hi everyone! I had the first Gen Iphone and bought a Scion xD car that had a built in Ipod/Iphone connector that charged the phone and allowed you to control the Iphone through the steering wheel controls. Never had a problem doing this with my first Gen Iphone or even when I updated to 3.0.

Now I have an Iphone 3GS, and when I connect it to my Scion the screen says that "this accessory is not meant to charge this device". I'm still able to control my music through the stereo, but I can't charge my Iphone at the same time.

Is this a software issue or hardware issue with the new 3GS? It doesn't make sense that the old iphone would charge and the new one won't. Any ideas? Or am I SOL?

The 3G and 3GS can no longer charge through the firewire pin on the connector; it only charges through USB. This is probably why it isn't working. Fortunately, the Apple store has an adapter that gets around this problem.

Ah ha! That's the problem then. I'll check out the apple store for that adapter. Thank you so much! Will I still be able to control my music using the adapter?

Yes, the adapter just provides an alternate power source. It's a little klunky, but it works.

I'm looking at the apple store now and I don't see the adapter you're talking about. I see the Belkin TuneBase Direct with Handsfree for iPhone, but that's a whole set up, not just an adapter. Would you be able to point me to the right adapter? Thanks so much!

A litte warning. The adapter is made by a compay called Schosce (spelling?) The adapter worked great between my 3G and my 08 Scion XB. When i upgraded to my 3GS the phone still charges and plays music but there is now a high pitched squeal in the audio. If you remove the adapter the squeal goes away but it wont charge. Emailed Tech support for Schosce but they are not responding.

Surfnet, thank you for the info and for relaying your experience to me. I just found the info on Scosche and was going to purchase it to get around this problem. Maybe the high pitched sound was a fluke? I'll return it if it happens to my XD. Thank you all for your help!

You need the Griffin Firewire to USB Charge Converter for iPod and iPhone 3G. I've purchased three, as I have so many firewire hardware devices. They work great.

Amazon is currently out of stock, but you can find them elsewhere.

Let us know how it works for ya. It is mostly evident between songs when silence/low audio from music is present.
