Stuck in Safe Mode

I recently updated my unibody macbook pro. the update was for Safari and iPhoto I believe. After the update I could not boot into my Mac OSX partition. It would boot until the apple logo, grey screen and spinning gear then turn the power of after 15-20 seconds. I was able to get into Single user mode and use the fsck function to repair "something" that was wrong (I followed a tutorial I found online). I rebooted and now every time I reboot it automatically boots into safe mode and takes an extremely long time to do so. I removed everything from the startup folders so no third party applications are loading on boot up. I am stuck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance..
