iPhone 3GS and Pioneer car deck not playing nice.

I recently had a Pioneer Premier DEH-P310UB installed in my Jeep. The reason I went with this model was because it seemed to do exactly what I wanted, charge the 3GS and allow me to control the iPhone from either the unit or the phone. The Pioneer is labeled as "Made for iPhone" and tagged as compatible with the iPhone 3G (and therefore, according to Apple, the 3GS).

So, here is my problem: the charging is erratic. For instance, I was coming home today, about a 35 minute drive, and the iPhone was charging as expected until about 30 minutes into the drive. At that point it just stops charging. If I unplug the USB (either from the iPhone or the Pioneer) it usually fixes and starts charging again. However, sometimes it takes a few pulls of the USB before it finally takes, and even then, many times it will only charge for a minute or two before going back to not charging. While this goes on, the iPhone displays the "Charging Not Supported" message, even though it is.

I have tried two cables, the one supplied from Pioneer and one supplied by Apple, I have reformatted the iPhone without restoring a backup, and my wife's 2nd gen iPod Touch seems to be charging fine, though she has not closely watched.

Could this be a bug in the 3.0 software? A hardware change? A hardware issue with either the phone or the radio? I am really stumped with this one.

I have the same problem. It's either a non compatibility issue with the Pioneer USB not understanding 3.0 and above software, or the iPhone 3.0 software is not liking the Pioneer USB. On my 3g it worked just fine, when i updated to 3.0 it started the problems. I get error-19 on the pioneer deck many times, and the phone doesn't charge half the time, and every once and a while, the phone decides it wants to completely reboot! now that is really annoying! but luckily i have wired in my ipod into the glove box incase something goes wrong with the iphone. it just ***** that it wont work, i like to keep my phone charged as much as possible. I would expect more that it is a problem with the pioneer than the phone personally... My phone might say that it is not supported with several devices and ask if i would like to turn signal off, but it still does what it is supposed to if you leave signal on. it charges, plays audio, and works just as if it was supported... the fact that the pioneer says error-19 to me all the time and i have to unplug and replug says that pioneer isnt recognizing the device... but what can be done? I have called pioneer about the problem and they say they dont know what to tell me.. so its really about when is pioneer going to update their decks to work with 3.0 software and above, and they better believe they will be getting me a new deck that works as soon as that happens! if anyone else has talked to pioneer about it and got any different answers please post them!

I have a kenwood stereo in my car with a usb hookup. 3.01 updated and now it causes all kinds of problems. I can no longer use the controls on my iphone 3gs while in ipod mode and hooked to the stereo. Also, it randomly shuts down, and also causes my stereo to freak out and do strange things. Pretty annoying and pretty poor performance from Apple. Im going to go back to the 3.0 and see what happens. I also find it absurd that some chargers and docks will not work with the 3gs. Not very convienent for loyal apple iphone and ipod users.

I have the same problem with my 3G phone running firmware 3.0.1
When I got the phone I plugged it into my head unit Clarion DB285USB
Everything worked great for a week long road trip to Colorado.
Over 40 hours of use in the car and not a single issue.
I got a refurbished 8Gig 3G... I am not sure of what firmware came on it.
After I upgraded the firmware to 3.0.1 the phone will charge when plugged into the headunit but will not play.
I also bought a $70 Ipod ready Phillips speaker system and it does the same thing.
The iPhone displays the "This accessory is not designed for iphone" message and will not play.
The Iphone always displayed this message but always played.
Since 3.0.1 it will not play.
Any ideas???

Everyone, I have the Pioneer AVIC 900BT and an ipone 3GS. I also have an iPod touch 2nd gen both with 3.1 software. I am having the same issue that everyone else here is reporting. Prior to getting the 3Gs I had the 3G. Charging was not an issue at all. Got my 3Gs around the same time 3.0 came out so I thought it was either a 3Gs issue or 3.0. Now, my iphone charges while connected to my Pioneer every blue moon; more not charging than charging. I even purchased the Pioneer software upgrade (v.3.0) hoping that would solve the issue. No luck. I upgraded to 3.1 thinking that would help. No luck. I just plugged my iPod touch into the Pioneer...charged right away. My conclusion is that it's a 3Gs issue. I guess I'll give Pioneer a call and see what they say.

if you have Bluetooth with your decks (my premier deck does but doesnt work with iphone just ipod)
pair your phone to your deck and go get a third party car charger my griffin charger works fine on my 3G from firmware 2 up to now 3.1 and actually 3.1 improved the BT audio streaming (3.0 occasionally has a few drops in the tunes which was quite irritating)
