Can't create playlist folders on ipod classic 120gb

Hi Everyone!

I have an ipod 120gb classic since Jan. and have synced music on it and have it organized with folders and then playlists in them. Now I am trying to add more music and can't create new folders. I highlight my ipod, click on File>New Playlist Folder and it creates one in the itunes playlist area instead. I can click on File>New Playlist and it will create one on the ipod (not in the itunes area like the folder one does.) I can drag playlists from itunes and drop them on the ipod. But when I try to drag an itunes playlist folder with playlists in it, just a playlist is created with the folder's name. On the ipod it will not have the songs in playlists, just in abc order. I honestly don't remember how I did create the folders I do have, but I don't know of any other way than what I'm doing now.

I called Apple support and the guy spent over 30 minutes with me (after I searched high and low through the discussion forum.) He tried on his end and was getting the same results. I even tried reinstalling itunes and did a reinstall of an earlier version of itunes and all that entailed with negative results.

If there's anyone out there than can help me I would greatly appreciate it because I do not like to have my music in lists but organized in folders on my ipod such as Pop, Country, Romantic, etc. I know this ipod can organize into folders since I did it earlier 🙂

Thanks!!

If you are using Sync to manage your iPod (as opposed to manually manage), then that's a good start.

Basically, almost everything is done in iTunes and then "copied" to your iPod during a Sync. So creation of new playlists and *Playlist Folders* is done in iTunes.

To start with, do not connect your iPod to iTunes. Then, in iTunes click on *File/New Playlist Folder* and an unnamed folder will appear in the playlist area. You can rename this and then drag existing playlists into the folder.

Once you have done all that you want, connect your iPod. Click on the device (your iPod) and you should see a series of tabs. Click on the Music tab and make sure that *Sync Music - All Songs and Playlists* is selected. Without this checked, your playlists will not transfer to your iPod.

I'm curious though; you mention having your music organised in folders by "Pop, Country, Romantic etc." but surely the genre will do this for you without any effort on your part except perhaps to correct the odd error in the Gracenote database (where iTunes gets the album/track information from).

If Genre is not appearing on your menus, you need to turn it on. From the *Main Menu* go to *Settings/Main Menu* and scroll down to Genre and select it to turn the tick on, which puts Genre on the main menu. It's the same for the *Settings/Music Menu* too.

Phil,
Thanks for your suggestions. I'm thinking that when I first synced my music I did it like you say. So I am going to organize my itunes with my folders and playlists with my current music and then sync with the checked music rather than trying to manually do it as I it set to do now. (I am able to drag individual playlists to the ipod this way.) However, I do think there might be a bug in itunes since we're supposed to be able to make folders just like the playlists can be made on the ipod. Hopefully, this will be worked out.

As to the genre, I do have that column listed, but the teacher in me likes to have things further organized so that for example, I have my pop music sorted by 60's, 70's, etc.

Again thanks and when I get this project done, I'll post if it worked (right now I'm multitasking-working on my school web page 🙂

Since it was possible to add playlist folders to the iPod (from the introduction of the classic, I think), it has never been possible to manually add them to an iPod. That is to say, drag and drop.

I'm not sure it's a "bug" rather than a purposely designed feature or a limitation of the iTunes software. Whatever the reason, in this instance drag and drop doesn't work. 😟

Hi Everyone!

First thanks to you Jeff for your help also. I have now resynced (is that a word? LOL) my ipod with folders that way I want. From the replies I got I was able to figure out what I was doing wrong which wasn't the way itunes worked and the way I thought it should 🙂 Part of my problem was that I had too big of a time span between syncings of my ipod, I had changed my itunes playlist, and I must have used my desktop computer to first load some of the songs rather than my laptop. So when the message came up when I had to change my settings I paniced when it said it was going to erase everything. Your comments sure did help jog my memory since I am a fairly new classic ipod owner!

So for those of you who would like your music sorted into folders and then your separate playlists in them, this is what I'm now doing (translation--what I learned to do!) 1. In itunes make your playlist folder, and then copy each of the playlists you want in it. Ex. folder-Christmas; playlists in it--The Chipmunks Christmas, Mannheim Steamroller Christmas Eve, etc. Do that for each kind of folder you want. (I ended up with 17 different folders!) 2. Connect your ipod and select to sync selected playlists, not manual. Go to the music tab and check sync music, selected playlists, making sure everything is checked that you want to sync including the folders themselves. 3. Disconnect your ipod when it says its completed. 4. When you want to sync additional music or folders put them in the itunes playlist. connect your ipod, make sure your setting is still on sync selected music. 5. When you click on the music tab make sure everything is checked that you added new and also the music that is already on your ipod. When itunes syncs it, only the new music will be added so the time will be only for the new stuff.

Lesson learned--Keep your itunes playlist area exactly the same as you want it on your ipod and keep the setting at sync selected playlists making sure everything is always checked that should be on the ipod.

Again, thanks for listening and I hope this helps others as well.
Have a Great Summer!

Just as a follow-up comment in case it wasn't clear, playlist folders only work with auto-sync. However, if you auto-sync and then change to manual management without deleting the iPod contents, the folders will stay intact on the iPod. For those that prefer manual management but want folders, this is the way to go.

A couple caveats:

a- While in manual mode you can't add additional playlists to existing folders, new playlists get created at the same "level" as the folders themselves.

b- When you change from auto-sync to manual, the iPod can (and will) continue to auto-sync song rating changes and play history when you connect to the library where the original auto-sync was done (but this only applies to songs from the original auto-sync, manually-added songs won't sync changes back to the library).

Hi Again!

Also, I learned that you need to make sure all your songs' boxes are checked in itunes. One of my albums was checked when I went to sync but wasn't on my ipod. This is when I discovered that none of the songs' boxes were checked in the itunes playlist.

Again, thanks to all for your help 🙂 (I'm almost done getting all my music onto my ipod!)
