i have files that I got from my mom's flip camera that are now on my computer. they used to play in quicktime but are now a black screen with just audio. I don't have the camera, it is my mom's so I can't upload the files from the camcorder. The files are just on my computer. Is there a way to convert those files somehow without actually having the camcorder?

When you plug in the Flip, open iMovie and then click on the camera icon, iMovie should see the flip as a connected camera and download the photos directly off the Flip.
The advantage of letting iMovie download the files directly is that iMovie gives the files meaningful names that represent the date of the clip. Where as I think when you use the Flip software then add the files to your iMovie you lose the date stamp as the files from the Flip application are not "smart named" like iMovie does.

Sorry ekr, I wasn't replying to you. I was replying to Mindfreakbabe's original post.
I don't know what the issue is with your files. Flip makes iMovie compatible files, so if they no longer play correctly, then you likely have another issue with your system and converting the files won't help.
Have you tried opening Disk Utility and then do a "Repair Permissions" on your start up drive?
