Disabling Screen Lock..

It appears that when I put my phone to sleep by pressing the sleep/wake button, it will lock the phone regardless of my auto-lock setting. It requires me to slice the lock to unlock the screen. Why can't I simply go back to home screen or last application screen by pressing the wake or home button? With 3.0, app can continue to run while in sleep mode so user ought to be able to easily view the last app screen without having to unlock the screen. Is there anyway to disable the lock screen? Auto-Lock setting has no effect apparently.

PC, Windows XP Pro, iPhone 3GS

The slide to unlock is required after the iPhone's screen is set to sleep regardless if you have the Passcode lock feature enabled or auto-lock. This is to prevent an app on the home screen from being pressed or a selection for an app that was selected when putting the screen to sleep if the screen is turned on while in your pocket for example.

3rd party apps cannot run in the background, but included apps can such as the Mail client if automatically check for new mail is selected, with the SMS app for receiving text, etc.

There is not a way to disable the slide to unlock when waking the iPhone or the iPhone's screen from sleep.

Actually, 3rd party app like gps app can continue to track gps signal. I know for fact because I"m using one right now. It is unfortunate that current OS does not provide an option to disable it. Accidental screen press should not be an issue because you have to press the wake or home button before the screen becomes active. It is difficult to press those buttons accidently. Why nIot give option? Oh well, another feedback..
