ibook smell

I am getting a funky smell coming from my keyboard. I have cleaned the board with some canned air but it still stinks. It doesn't smell like anything burned but more like body odor (yeah, I know, "eww"). I keep my computer pretty clean and I bathe regularly, so I don't know what it can be. Any suggestions? Thanks.

For what it's worth, I just started buying used iBooks to refurbish. I tear them down to fix whatever is wrong. One of the first I bought had this horrible smell. It's bad enough to make you gag (and yet, I find myself drawn to it...). Anyway, I noticed that this smell was coming from the keyboard, and was also on the screen. On take-apart, I also noticed that the yellow thermal pad on the graphics processor had this smell also. The graphics processor is under the logic board, so not directly under the keyboard. As of yet I can't determine if this is coincidence or what. Two out of four bought systems have this problem. On advice here, I have removed the label from the back of the keyboard and that is definitely where it is coming from. Again, don't know what role the thermal pad plays in this, if any, but wanted to throw that out there.

It's the sticker with the serial number on it:

Actually, I believe there are two stickers: one with the serial number and one with the Ethernet i.d. number. You will need to remove both stickers, but put them in a safe place, and I would also recommend keeping track of them in a text file or Sticky Note on your computer. Be sure to remove all traces of glue, also, in case it turns out to be the smelly culprit. Don't use strong solvents that could melt the plastic. A tiny bit of Pledge dusting spray sprayed on the corner of a clean soft cloth may be helpful in removing the adhesive.

Be sure to shut down and remove the battery before removing the keyboard.

Good luck, and let us know if that was the source of your problem.

I bought mine in 2002. HOWEVER, Since I my hard drive died a few months ago and had to be replaced, I have had nothing but problems. Of course, my Applecare warranty expired immediately afterwards so I am out of luck. The smell seemed to start about a month ago and I noticed it whenever I walked through the part of the room my computer was in. I did everything from shampoo the carpet to buying room deodorizers. Nothing worked. I finally realized the BO smell was coming from the computer! In a way I am happy to hear it's not just mine, but also have a plethora of other things going wrong with my computer since the new hard drive.

Thanks for the info. I too have a smelly iBook since I got the logic board replaced for the second time. Because of the white color I have been very careful especially after eating to wash my hands. I thought it smelled like sweaty fat guy's cheeto fingers or something but it looks clean and no crumbs or grease in, on or under the keys.

Last night I popped up the keyboard and there seems to be some glue that is still sticky on some stuff to the left where the airport card is. I don't know if that is where the logic board goes but I don't recall it being sticky before. It has definitiely gotten worse since I first noticed it but I certainly don't want to cause damage when it is otherwise working fine.

I'll take a closer look when I get home...
