You certainly do not need GPRS to make a call, I remember when no phones had GPRS and they made calls just fine.

Not every ones data plan is unlimited , some providers charge GPRS by the minute rather than by the KB making this a serious bug.

go-to settings > General and turn off Location services this will disable GPS, please note this will not effect battery life a great deal if thats why you are trying it. I have tested this many times and i get the very much the same battery with it set to on or off, also its a essential part of many apps and Google apps etc hope this helps.

yes, you can completely disable GPRS. I am an US expat in UAE and had several problems becasue my Iphone 3Gs started accessing GPRS and the bill went through the roof. After some research, I found out this method: Open your Safari and go to noiphonedata.com. Click on the button showing disable GPRS and, Viola you are set. Hope that helps

Hmmmm....aside from the fact that "noiphonedata.com" does not appear to currently be available, I am just a little sceptical that clicking a button in a website on Safari can effectively change the settings on the phone.

As to whether it counts as a "serious bug" I don't know. These pages are not exactly crammed with messages about the inability to disable GPRS, so how big an issue is it?

It used to be possible to deactivate it, on my Luxemburgish Tango phone. I did it on the menu Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network. Since I updated to 3.0.1. that last menu is no longer available and the phone is connected all the time. Is it a bug in the OS update? Can it be fixed?

There is no way to turn off data except to ask your provider to disable it. What the other person told you has to do with GPS not GPRS.

I used noiphonedata.com about a month ago and have absolutely no problems. My 3gs works great and enjoying it. Of course, it's my opinion
