Switched ISP rcn to comcast unable to connect to internet

hardwired ethernet connection worked when connected to RCN (5+ years), but just switched to COMCAST and having problems w/modem. modem resets after 2-5 minutes online, and continues to reset until i disconnect the ethernet plug from mac.

With the help of COMCAST (over 15+ hrs on site & 4 days, 6 techs on 1st name basis and they are starting asked what's for dinner):
replace ethernet cable, replaced modem, COMCAST ran new lines to house & inside, ran new phone line to modem (landline connected to modem goes dead also), reset the modem, unplugged modem, today the tech tried a seperate modems-one for the phones and 2nd for internet,

In "Network" Location: automatic, Show: Built-in Ethernet, Selected: TCP/IP, Configure: using DHCP.

When all modem lights were lit i ran a diagnostic and all lights were green, after 2-5 minutes the ISP, internet & server turned red.

Same things happen when I try setting up router (netgear), but put that on the back burner for now. just trying to get one up at a time.
i am able to connect to the internet hardwired to a pc as long as i am not connected to the mac.

And finaly my question(s). Anyone out there having the same issues? How can I fix it? I noticed blinking cusor on TCP/IP network screen "DHCP Client ID", tech says don't need to fill in. Is this correct?

One of the techs will be back tomorrow and hope to have a solution. He is bring a 3rd modem, but not sure this will solve the problem. I seem to think there is a setting that needs to be turned on/off. or some other really simple step I am missing.

The connection between a cable modem and the ISP is unrelated to your computer. Whether your computer is connected or not, the modem either will or will not negotiate with the ISP.

There is only one connection to the computer and that is from the modem itself via the Ethernet line. However, you haven't indicated if the disconnect is between the modem and your computer or between the modem and the ISP.

As for the Mac's network configuration it should be automatic based on the settings you've described.

You might observe this using the modem's status lights. My Motorola Surfboard modem has five status lights, but only one relates to talking with the computer (or router.) If there is no connection to the computer then only the first four status lights are active. If all is normal they are green. So on your modem if the status light that indicates connection to the ISP is going red regardless of whether the Ethernet cable is connected, then the problem is between the modem and ISP. However, if the Ethernet line is connected and the status light for the computer-modem connection is green but then goes red (modem-ISP light is still green) then the problem is between the modem and the computer.

If Comcast has run your Internet cable via splitters they need to check line levels because too many splitters can result in loss of signal strength (causes disconnects) or high standing waves and impedance mismatches (also can cause disconnects or no connects.) Best they run your Internet cable straight from the box and not off splitters from your cable TV line. Any cable TV and Internet cables should be separate runs and free of splitters.

Insist on a really good cable modem. I recommend Motorola Surfboard SB5120.
