I have a 2nd gen with 3.0 software but I've been having this problem since before the upgrade. I am away from home but I know their wi-fi password. I don't know where to enter it because the iPod is not prompting me for it, it's just telling me "unable to join the network" and I'm going crazy.
If you are away from home, then the password of your home network is not going to work for a router elsewhere. (If that is how I read your message.)
Go into Settings and then WiFi and press on the white bar that has the name of the network you want to join. When a tick mark appears on the left side, press on the blue arrow icon to the right. Then you have a settings panel and you may be asked for a password, for
that network,
1. Tap Settings > WiFi > Other network
2. Enter the name of the network you are trying to log onto
3. Tap Security and tell the iPod what type of security the network is using
4. Tap Password and enter the network password
If this still doesn't work, reset your network settings (tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network settings and try the steps above again once the iPod restarts.
If you don't know what type of security is being used by the network, ask the owner before you try to log in. WEP encryption and the iPod have a love-hate relationship so if you still have problems, do write back.
