Unresponsive IR sensor in the Apple TV?

I put the Apple tv in standby mode last night. Now it doesn't respond to any commands from the remote. There are normal slideshow images appearing on the television, but the white or amber light is not showing. I tried unplugging/plugging Apple TV with no difference. I checked the remote with a digital camera and a volt meter. It's fine. Apple TV appears in the iTunes list and I was able to update the media just like normal. Nothing seems to snap the apple tv out of this funk it's in. Of course I can't perform a reset because I need to be able to access the apple tv's menu with the remote, but of course, that's the whole problem.

I'm having the same issue since updating my Apple TV last week. Photos play on the AppleTV, and when I click the remote button, the white indicator turns amber, indicating that it is receiving a signal, yet the Apple TV does nothing. I've tried two different remotes now with no luck.

The post regarding unpairing remotes isn't much help if you can't navigate using your IR remote.

yes it is helpfull, as you don't need to navigate anywhere to unpair.
you simply press the appropriate buttons to action the unpair command.

To add to which, the fact that the unit blinks amber when the remote is pressed tells you that your problem is a pairing issue.

I encountered the same problem just a couple of hours ago: I could reboot the Apple TV with the remote, but once up and running, it wouldn't react when I pressed the remote. So, over to this forum, where I found this discussion and Woggledog's link to Apple support page ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1555). Once there, I saw a link to another page ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2827) which even better describes the problem and the solution.
So, I just followed the instructions, and now it's working again.
It seems the latest update may cause Apple TV to loose the pairing to the remote - the very fact that the indicator light flashes amber when you press buttons on the remote means that the pairing is lost - but this fixes it.
