USB Issue - This device could perform faster

Hi, I have just purchased an iPhone 3GS and have a problem with my USB connection. When I connect the iPhone to my computer (running Windows XP) I get a message to say: This device can perform faster, see pic http://www.flickr.com/photos/24748736@N00/3724526038/

This is suggesting that I am not plugging it into a USB 2.0 port, but I am and I had an iPod touch and did not experience this problem. When I plug the iPhone into a friends laptop I do not get this message.

This is really frustrating as it means any Sync with my computer is performed very slowly.

Any ideas what might be causing problem or know how to fix it?

If this is an older computer, it may not have a USB 2.0 port. If you are plugging into the computer directly (not through a hub) it could be the culprit. My son gets the same message when plugging his first generation iPhone into his computer, but it will still work, but as you describe, slowly. He isn't going to worry about it right now, because he cannot afford a new computer. The only fix is to get a USB 2 card for the computer.

It looks like I didn't read your post good enough and you said it was a 2.0 port. It could be a driver issue you can address through Windows update.

Greetings,

Some of the PeeCees with Winblows had USB 1.1 and 2.0 ports - we have some of those here at the college, but they are getting old, near 5 years and are going out the back door as fast as we can get rid of them.

I'd check your documentation, and/or try a rear mounted port - a lot of the front mounted ports were USB 1.1. You can also get that message when you use a cheap USB Hub, even though it's' supposed to be USB 2.0.

Cheers,
M.

Yep, I am having the same issue. I upgraded my wife's and my phones. Her's is a 16GB mine is the 32GB. Using the same PC, iTunes and cable her phone syncs fine and fast w/ no such warning message. Disconnect her phone and hook mine up and it pops the same "This USB device can perform faster if you connect it to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port." message and mine syncs painfully slow.

Opened a case on this and talked w/ support rep, he stated it's a problem w/ my USB port and the larger HD in my phone. "What???" I said, "How can that be if one phone works fine and one doesn't?" His response was for me to go buy a USB 2.0 card and see if that works because it may be a HW issue w/ my USB port.

I suggested it may be a HW issue w/ my phone at which point I was quickly corrected that it could not be. 😟

hi guys! im having the same problem! ive got a 32 gig 3gs and when it plugs into vista 64bit it comes up with the message about "for faster speeds plug into usb 2.0". i then plugged it into my lap top running vista and i get the same thing! its annoying cos transfer is stupidly slow. i can confirm both computers have usb 2.0.

computer at work running xp doesnt bring up this message! so its definately a hardware issue. tried updating everything even reinstalling everything.... and nothing. for some reason the new iphone doesnt like older usb 2.0 ports (both computers are a few years old) i run many other usb 2.0 devices on my pc's never had this issue!

my ipod nano tranfers fine at very fast speeds!

ill keep you posted guys! apple should sort this out.... its a fault on their part. the devise clearly doesnt like all usb 2.0 ports
