RAM, how to get it and which type to get

Hi, just want to get my ibook running at lightspeed. was thinking of upgrading to 512MB but not sure whether that entails just buying another 256 or going the whole caboodle and buying 512 MB of ram to go with the 256 in my computer already.
Basically what I am trying to say is whether you just add what you are going to buy to what you have, or if you have to replace what you have with what you buy.

Kindof wordy, but hope it makes sense.

Also, where's the best place to buy RAM?

Thanks....

Depends on what your ibook has built in. If it is 256 built in, which I'm thinking it does, then you can just buy 256. I would suggest, if you have the money go all out and get the 512mb. This way in the future if you want to upgrade you won't have to discard the 256mb you would have bought, since you can only have one extra stick of ram.

We max out every iBook in memory, the latest G4 iBooks can take up to 1.25 or 1.5G. We usually just buy the 1G stick from our memory vendor, Crucial.com. You tell their system what computer you are upgrading, via the pull down menus, and voila - the right memory comes up.

There are stores/websites out here that will sell you memory at a much cheaper price. But the prices at Crucial are not that out of line, and frankly when depending on technology we find quality wins over cheapness. We have not had a single problem with Crucial, after 100+ upgrades.

Be sure you have the latest in software updates as well (operating system, etc.).

It would help to know exactly which machine you have. All iBook G4s come with at least 256 MB of built-in RAM permanently soldered to the motherboard, and contain a single empty slot for an expansion module. Ordering options include memory added to the expansion slot before delivery.

On the other hand, some PowerBooks have two slots with no permanent memory. Depending on the original ordering options, the RAM can be added to an empty slot, and/or the original RAM can be replaced with a larger capacity module.

It sounds like you only have an original permanent 256 MB. You can add 256 MB, 512MB, or 1GB modules. The type of memory needed isn't so clear unless you can specify which iBook G4 model you own. My guess would be a 200-pin PC2100 module - unbuffered and non-ECC.

I like Crucial for their product quality and compatibility guarantee if you use their "Memory Advisor". However - you can get the exact same memory from third party suppliers. If you're not 100% sure that a certain module is going to work, I'd recommend buying from a retailer with a guarantee of compatibility and/or a generous return policy. Newegg has great prices on Crucial RAM, but you have to be darn sure that it's going to work, as they charge restocking fees and offer no technical support. Also - sometimes RAM that carries all the "correct specs" don't work. Some Apple machines can be finicky about memory.

One more thing, if you're only planning on adding 256 MB, the price of PC2100 modules is so cheap that you might consider just eating the cost if it doesn't work.

My guess is that the following 256MB PC2100 SODIMMs will work:

PNY guarantees that the N256D21OPT, N256D27OPT, N512D21OPT, or N512D27OPT will work in all iBook G4s before the latest (mid-2005) models:

Well, previously I would've recommended CRUCIAL, but I'm having a little trouble with them currently over a bad 256 sodimm. It fails the Apple Hardware Test CD test, and the support guy on the phone acts like he has no idea what I am talking about. I left a message with their email support, but so far no response. I may have to re-evaluate my recommending them to friends depending on how this turns out.
