Dorm room question.

So this is a pretty crazy question.
I am planning to buy a wireless router so I can have a wireless connection in the room. The dorm room comes with an ethernet connection port for high speed but I am guessing it is connected to a master router that has many ethernet connections for many other dorm rooms. would I be able to use airport express in my room and create a connection or not because of the already connected router? and if not, is there any possible way of creating a wireless network in my room (they have it for the classrooms and library and lounges but not the wing that I am in.. ) ? And they IT staff said that we are allowed to create our own connection, but they didn't tell me how... THANKS GUYS. Just thought it would be much cheaper if I could roam on WiFi rather than use 3G and get mad data charges...

Yes, you can connect an Airport Express to the room's Ethernet connection, and establish a local wireless network. You can connect your Mac to that (and since you mention 3G, I presume you have an iPhone, which you can also connect to the Wi-Fi network).

You can also just connect your Mac to the Ethernet connection, and share that connection over the Airport card in your Mac, and connect your iPhone to that. Search Finder > Help menu for 'Sharing your internet connection'.

Hey, the thing is that they said that there was a chance of not establishing my own wireless connection because the ethernet is already connected to a wireless router. so it is linking out of it.

And which program do I need to buy to establish a wireless connection with just my ethernet plugged in? If I could plug in my computer and use WiFi on my phone that would basically solve everything, not sure if I would need an Airport Express at that point. Thanks so much.
