How to scan legal size document? - Canon MF4370dn

I am trying to scan a legal-size (8.5x14) document using the ADF on my Canon MF4370dn. The only size options offered in Image Capture are US Letter and A4. When I cnoose letter, the entire document feeds through, but the resulting pdf cuts off at 11". The specs for the device say that ADF capture up to 14" is supported.

Any ideas would be welcome.

Sir, with respect, I am asking the question here in hopes of getting an answer from a knowledgeable fellow user, not a reference to customer support.

I cannot agree that Canon support is good at responding. I did talk to them, and they seemed totally clueless. The person I spoke to suggested that Image Capture doesn't support legal size paper, and I should use "the other software". On further questioning, he was unable to say what software he might be referring to.

The ScanGear application is not a separate user selectable application, it is part of the 'MF4300 Series ScanGear v1.00' installer that you would have installed.

According to the documentation included with the ScanGear driver, when you scan from the platen, the ScanGear application opens allowing you to set a number of preferences, such as the original size and resolution. But when you scan from the ADF, this preview window does not open, so it will default to the factory settings. So you may need to scan from the platen so that you can modify the defaults and then use the ADF.

My wife uses an MF4380 at home so I can confirm this later.

Yes, I agree that there is no actual Scangear application for this printer on the Mac. Downloading the Scangear package for this printer simply installs a driver, intended to be used with Image Capture.

The only preferences I see are those in the Image Capture application, and that is where I find the size choices of US Letter or A4; no US Legal (which means 8 1/2 x 14 inches).

Pahu, I look forward to hearing about how this works on your wife's MF4380. I would expect it to have the same characteristics as the MF4370dn.

Okay. Tested on the wife's MF and Legal is not a preset selectable option for the ADF. But, it looks like you can change the scan parameters if you set the options in Image Capture to use the TWAIN User Interface (Devices > Browse Devices > MFxxxx > Use TWAIN UI). This will open the ScanGear MF preview window and here you the Output Size menu lets you set the X & Y lengths or use Free Size, which will probably let you scan Legal.

I really appreciate you taking the time to do this. Unfortunately, when I go to the Image Capture Device Browser dialog, I see the following:

LOCAL DEVICES
Canon MF4360-4390 [Use TWAIN UI] grayed out and non-clickable
TWAIN DATA SOURCES
Canon D400-450 [Use TWAIN UI]
Canon D460-490 [Use TWAIN UI]
Canon MF4320-4350 [Use TWAIN UI]

So, it looks like I am unable to follow your instructions. Unless you think it would be a good idea to choose one of the other devices, even though it's not the right model number?

If Image Capture connects the driver with the scanner, then one of the TWAIN drivers may work. It would not hurt to try. Otherwise, you may need to look for a third-party driver.

Do you have any other applications that support scanning, like Photoshop Elements? If so, try it with them.

Otherwise, you should look into third-party scanning applications. VueScan is probably the most widely used shareware. There is also the TWAIN/SANE open-source project, which is freeware. Silverfast is a commercial product, but it may not support your scanner.

In the MF4300 D480_ScanGear_V100_MacOSX_usEN.dmg package is a folder called Documents that contains the document Guide-Scan-US.pdf.

Page 1-8 states, “If [Canon MF4360-4390] is displayed in the pull-down menu, installation of the driver was successful.”

Since yours shows it but is not selectable, try quitting Image Capture, launch Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions, and then see if it is available in Image Capture.

The platen is only 8.5 x 11.7" which is why the default ScanGear preference setting for “input” aka “Original Placement” needs to be changed to “Feeder” so that the ADF can “automatically” recognize the page length up to 14". See section 2 of Guide-Scan-US.pdf, especially pages 2-7 through 2-9).

Alternatively, not sure what was included with the device, but if it included the software Presto! PageManager try to scan using that application. If you have other Twain-supported apps like Adobe PhotoShop or Acrobat Professional, try them.

Hope this makes sense and more importantly helps.
