iPhone lights up by itself every few seconds

I've exactly the same problem. I was finally able to do a hard reset. I restored from the back up and it seemed to solve the problem for a couple of days.
The problem reappeared yesterday. No idea why

i have the same problem... mi iphone wake ups byself every 30 seconds... i can see the "this accesory was not made to work with iphone"
i try to turn of the iphone but it turn on byself...
i try to sync with itunes but my pc can see the iphone... it show me a message saying "usb devide not recognized"

i have the original accesories.. (dock and cable)

any idea?

I just tried this and, for the first time in weeks, I have been able to turn my iphone off!!

Fingers crossed it stays that way.

I am guessing this is a combination of a software update which exacerbates a fault where some gunk of some description shorts a couple of pins in the connector - pins which are now used that weren't in previous versions of the OS, perhaps?

Hi same problem with mine new 3Gs:

-lights up every 15-20 sec sometimes less than that with "this accessory is not compatible with i-Phone, and cousing some audio interference would you like to put in airplane mode, and bla bla bla". I am so f.... mad.

-second problem is that volume slider is sometimes off and sometimes on, at you tube or i-pod, today start happening same problem with headphones.

Everything started few weeks ago when I upgrade it with new software, and also I am using only original apple accessories, I did restore in iTunes not working, home and power button not working, I don't know anymore what to do...

Somebody has any solutions? Thanks!!!

Maybe your power button on the top is sticking. MIne did the same thing, but the local Apple store genius was able to un-stick it with some things that looked like dental tools after taking out the SIM. Free, even.

i still have the same problem....

i have the 3.1.2 software but i flash it with the 3.0 software and it don't solve the problem...

it's driving me crazy... somebody has any solutions?

I have exactly the same symptoms (lights every minute, doesn't stay off...). this looks like a common problem.
maybe it has something to do that mine was dropped in the snow for a couple of seconds?
I restored it and re-jailbreak it but without success. I even noticed that between restore and jailbreak it didn't stayed off...so maybe it could be something hardware

Hello everyone, *I may have found a work around for this problem*

I've had the same problems since the other day when I got snow down my iPhone's accessory port. (Obviously water damage)
Anyway, here are my symptoms:


-Lights up/awakens every 30 seconds (rarely displays "This accessory is not made to work with the iphone") but this happens only when it's not plugged in to a power source

-Will not shut down. Automatically restarts

-Obvious power drain from waking up every 30 seconds



*My Workaround*:
You must need a jailbroken iPhone for this!
There is an app in Cydia called "Popup Blocker", this will allow you to disable the waking up problem. It is on the iClarified source, but I recommend downloading the free version on http://cydia.xsellize.com. After you have downloaded that and rebooted, go into Settings->Popup Blocker->Alerts->Accessory Warnings and change it to these settings:
Block When Unlocked: on
Block When Locked: on
Wake On Alert: off
Exit out and test it out.

Notice: This will not prevent your iPhone from restarting, however it'll prevent your iPhone from waking every 30 seconds.


I just found this out today and it's working so far!

My phone was experiencing this exact same issue recently. The problem is the accumulated 'gunk' that gets in the docking port. My guess it that with enough grime the contaminents will acutally short out a couple leads on the connector. Hence the rapidly draining battery and the constant restarts; it thinks there's something plugged in but there incompatible leads being shorted.

Basically all you need to do is clean the contacts on the docking port. I suppose alcohol will work but I used this stuff called DeoxIT. It's an electronics cleaner specifically designed to clean and recoat contact leads like PCI cards.
The DeoxIT that I used came as a single-use sample pack which looks like a wetnap. I took the DeoxIT pad and put it on the tip of a tiny screwdriver then ran the pad with the screwdriver across the leads in the port. I also wadded the pad up and ran it through the headphone jack just because.

That's it! Problem solved.

Like I said, I'm sure alcohol may work but that's not what I used. If alcohold does not work for you I recommend picking up some of this DeoxIT stuff; it really is a good product.

I have a solution for my situation. My iPhone (original) started having the same symptoms two weeks ago:

1) iPhone would light up spontaneously every few minutes (unless it was charging)
2) Moments after powering the iPhone down, it would automatically restart

Like others, restoring the OS and all my data, apps and configuration did not solve the problem. Then I looked at "Settings > Notifications". It was set to "off". I had two apps that could send alerts: Todo 3.4.3 by Appigo.com and AP Mobile News (latest version). When the problem first appeared, I had recently set Todo to use Alerts. Turning Alerts off did not fix the problem.

That said, I chose to remove AP Mobile News. The problem immediately vanished. All has been well for several days now.

well, i'm not going to explain anything about my iPhone cuz i had EXACTLY same problems as the first post does.

hmmm... as far as the thread goes, it seems that we haven't found any method that would surely and permanently fix this issue.
but after reading most of the posts, i'm suspecting that the problem are really on the dock connector. out of frustration, i simply blow the ****** hole as hard as i could... and the problems are miraculously gone!

it didn't light up by itself, the "this accessory..." message is gone, and i could turn it off!

besides the wishful blowing, the desperate "plug and unplugging" routine might have played some part too.

now i could only wait for the next couple of days and hope that the problems won't appear anymore.
apple owe us an explanation! many people are experiencing this, and we didn't even know what might have caused it. i'm not going to buy the new iPhone 4 if it's going to start acting up like this after a while! they're lucky that i already own my original iPhone for quite some time before this problem appears.

Post reading all the posts and comparing with my experience following worked for my iPhone 2G-3.1.1(this is not a Software problem though)

Following was the sequence -

1. My iPhone was well in the beginning.
2. Got some moisture or water one day in heavy rain fall( i was on a bike)
3. I did a dry up process with rice Bags ( google it if you dunno)
4. iPhone started working well - but There starts the original problem

my iPhone WAKES UP EVERY MINUTE (sometimes wrong accessory message too)

Cause - My phone got some CARBON (yes believe me it is carbon) in the openings (earpiece and dock port)

Solution -
2 Earbud and little petrol (or any good alcoholic cleaner)

Process -
****SWITCH OFF your phone *****

1. Take First earbud and then do a dry clean by pushing earbud into headpiece(you will have to reduce size by pressing cotton so that it goes into earpiece easily)

2. Use second side of earbud to clean dock port (to remove dry carbon)

3. Use petrol to wet the earbud completely ( repeat step 1 and 2 with wet earbud with petrol)

Dry both the phone openings properly.


Switch on when you feel petrol is gone away with winds....

That is done...

Same problem here also on the new 3GS- I was wondering..Have anyone else with this problem plugged it into a non-supported device like a docking station by mistake ?

Mine does the same. It started after I "upgraded" to 3.1.
