ATF/Font Book font activation – why is it doing that?

Sometimes I get a pop-up that asks me whether I want to activate a font which is located, as a backup, on an external volume; eg:

“Adobe Lightroom 2 wants to use the font ‘Gill Sans’ on the volume [external volume]. This font is not installed. Allow Adobe Lightroom 2 to use this font?”

Actually, I have this font on my startup volume, but disabled in Font Book.

It would seem more logical to me if I was asked to activate the font residing on my startup disk. Maybe that’s because I don’t understand how font activation works. Just curious.

Any insight into this, anybody? TIA.
