Q: G3 iBook airport card

I bought and installed an Airport card for my G3 iBook. But when I opened the Network pref in System Preferences, it said "Your network settings have been changed by another application." When I OKd that, it disappeared and then reappeared immediately and would not quit. I had to crash out completely and restart. I can't configure the Airport card or connect. So I went to the airport setup assistant. It talks about configuring the Airport Base Station. I was told all I needed to make an airport card work was a wireless router, which I have in good working order. The other thing I noticed was the Airport setup assistant is a Classic App and I'm running 10.4.11 on the IBook. I'd very much appreciate a brief explanation of where I'm going wrong. Do I, in fact, require an Airport base station for the G3 iBook to work wirelessly in my house? And if not, how do I configure the card to work? If I can't, please feel free to tell me the hard truth.
