JVC GY-HM100u on FCE

So, I have final cut pro on my home computer, and FCE on my laptop. I need to edit my footage from the JVC on my laptop, but FCE doesn't recognize the files.

Is it possible to copy the Apple Intermediate Codec from Final Cut Pro, to FCE and have it work? If so, in which folder do I place it in FCE?

Thanks so much!

First, it's not legal. Second, you don't need to as the Apple Intermediate Codec is available in FCE. FCP however does not capture HDV using the Apple Intermediate Codec. It uses a proprietary codec that supports HDV natively. It will not work with FCE. If you captured the material in FCP using the Apple Intermediate Codec you can work with it without problem in FCE.

That's the thing. It's not captured. I import directly from the SDHC card. I need a codec that recognizes the file type. From a different post on here I learned that because one user had the pro app Logic Pro, he was able to edit in FCE.

"After learning a great deal on this form, The JVC HM100U camcorder I believe is intended for specific Pro editing software to be used. I was lucky to have it work in FCE because I also use Logic Pro 8. I tried to edit or just review the files in a Windows base PC with no success. I have not tried all the add-on or patches, but now I feel this would require a lot of work for the average consumer. If you intend to use the JVC HM100U, I would advice to inquire first if your editing software can work with the MPEG-2 Long GOP format if you are not using FCP. I do not work much with Windows video software, so maybe I wrong on this."

I have a similar situation. I have film clips in .mp4 format from a friend's JVC HM-100 that I can't import in FCE. I bought a license for QuicktimPro, think it would be able to convert the files, but QTPro can't even open the files - it just gives me an error message ("the movie contains some invalid data") then quits. The files play fine in VLC.

I tried a video converter software (iSkySoft) and was able to convert to .mov, but I don't feel like shelling out $50 to buy a license after I just wasted $30 on QTPro.

Any ideas here? I appreciate your help!

Best regards, David

OK, let me ask me question another way. It looks like the only way to convert the mp4 files from the JVC HM-100 is to buy a video converter software for $50 because QuicktimePro, which cost me $30, doesn't do this, even though it claims to support mp4.

So now my question: are video converters like iSkySoft reliable enough to use? Do I risk losing any quality? Is there anything in the settings I should watch out for?

Thanks... David
