I have experienced on my 3gs that my volume gets stuck on either the highest setting or lowest setting like its button is continually being pushed and will not get off that setting. I do have an iskin case but it still will be stuck even when I take off the case. I have to shut down the phone to get the volume icon to turn off and the volume controls to not be stuck. This has happened three times since having the phone. Its most frustrating when I am listening to it in the car and cannot turn it off and back on when driving. Has anyone else experienced this and does anyone know why its happening? Like I said before I thought it was because of my case but it continues to stick even after I take the case off. I know apple has the beta 3.1 out and it will contain lots of fixes that people have been experiencing but I have not seen a problem that looks like mine in this discussion thread so I am not sure Apple knows about this or that it is wide spread like the other problems to get a bug fix. This problem is easily fixed and only an annoyance because I have to restart the phone to get it to stop.
I've not read of this particular issue. If it is happening with the case removed I suspect it is serious. If it was happening to me, I'd take the phone to an Apple store because I doubt an OS update will fix this sort of problem.
Question: Does it happen only to sound (voice, movie) volume or with the ringer volume, too?
This has been happening to me too when im listening to music. I cant find the problem but its getting really annoying... my volume always gets stuck on low like the button is being held down. even when i slide the volume bar on the screen all the way up it just automatically goes down. the only solution ive found is turning the phone off then back on.

Sounds like the exact same problem I have. Fortunately it doesn't happen to me that often but when it does it ****** me off because usually it is when I am driving.
Has anyone found any solution to this problem, I am having the exact same issue. Turning off the phone helped but I guess this means I can't use the volume buttons on the side of the phone anymore. I'm thinking the only way to get it back to normal is to take it in and get it repaired.
I have also been sufforing from this. I have found a workaround though so you don't have to restart the phone imidiatly. First of all you need to have your home button double click set to iPod and enable controls while music is playing. Then whenever the volume gets stuck just leave the music playing and hit home. Then double tap to bring up the controls and adjust the volume there. Now if you go back into iPod the volume will still be stuck, but stuck at the level you set it as.
I'm thinking about taking my phone in to apple though, as the 3.1 update did NOT solve this. Just happens to me for first time on 3.1 today, just one week after updating
