My Microphone Won't turn Off

I have a similar problem.
It appeared to start following installation of external USB audio input decvice (EDIROL PCR1).

If I reboot the microphone functions as expected and holds the mic level set in the preferences.

If i start iTunes or any other audio program the microphone activates with full input level??

...very annoying as it picks up the sound from the audio programs and generates feedback.

Does anyone have a solution, or advice on further debugging the source of the fault?

Are you talking about the internal one that comes with your computer, or an external one that you would plug in? If it's internal, I'm not sure there is a way to turn it off or why you would want to; if it's external, I'm afraid I can't recommend much past simply un-plugging it.

Hello there,

Had some problems in cubase with the internal mic keep picking up noise. All you have to do is go in to system preferences > sound > input > select audio line in instead of mic. This should solve the problem 🙂


Shame their isn't a mute button instead for the mic, but there you go you can't have everything

Sorry response has taken so long....

My G4 laptop only has the internal Mic as an audio input device.

When the PCR1 is connected I can use this as an audio input device but it still leaves the internal Mic input on full (even though the input volume slider in the sound preferences is on the lowest level)

Your microphone being on usually doesn't hurt anything. What's the problem?

any reason why the mic volume keeps ramping itself up? i want to use skype without having to hear myself, but if i turn the input volume down it keeps going up by itself?!

Just playing with the settings in the 'Audio MIDI Setup' utility and spotted that I had the 'thru' tick box selected for the input device!

Unticking this box has resolved the problem.
