error code 212c/1/1:0X00000092

This code shows up when running the Apple Hardware Test disc on our iMac and is refering to a fault on the logic board. I have seen the issue raised before on this forum and on other mac forums. As yet no one has been able to say what the fault is. Nor has anyone reported a computer failure. Ours is working just fine. (fingers crossed). Could not apple or someone who fixes Macs tell us what this error is and what to do about it?

Best wishes Richard

Thanks for your response Michael. The serial number of the machine is W84431GNPNZ.
The machine was bought in September 2004 and the logic board was changed in March 2007 under an Applecare contract. Interestingly when I searched for the serial number under the AboutThis Mac it shows as a line of zeros.

Others forum users have reported this same error code as far back as Dec 2005 and most recently in Sept last year. In no case does anyone report that the computer refused to run nor did anyone report that they had found the meaning of the code.

Best wishes Richard

It is not unusual to see a replacement logic board with no serial number, as Apple only provided a utility to service personnel to 're-serialize' a logic board with the machine serial number after replacing it, about 18 or so months ago. Prior to that time, or if the procedure to encode the serial number was not followed, queries which relied on a response from the board would produce a string of zero or null characters.

Valid Apple Hardware Test error codes related to logic board failure for that product family are 4ETH, 4IRP, 4MLB, 4PRC and 4SNS. Nothing like 212C appears in the published list of codes.

The error mysteriously appears related only to machines manufactured for distribution in the European Union: yours was purchased initially in France.

Because your machine is subject to the defective capacitor issue, I would remove the back and carefully inspect the clusters of capacitors for any evidence of bloating or leaking. It is possible to have received a logic board from Apple which itself later developed this problem, if the potentially defective capacitors were used to fabricate or refurbish it. Any defect should be readily obvious.

I do have an iMac G5 20" 1.8 mhz that will not boot up from the hard drive and doesn't get past the gray screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel that locks up after about 60 seconds. I ran the Hardware test and get the 212C/1/1 0X00000092 error code.

I was able to get the hard drive wiped clean by doing iMac as a target disk and using my laptop to read the Software install disk that was in the iMac. I reloaded the software and rebooted the iMac and it came online and worked for several days and one time when I restarted it I can only get the logo and spinning wheel that after about 54 seconds locks up.

I have restarted it about 100 times in the past week and it only fully booted twice. Checked out the logic board and the caps look OK. What can be the problem? Thanks in advance. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

John
