Photos 2008 and 2009 disappeared, iphoto library too...

I had just finished importing photos from my camera when the iphoto application "quit" and asked the usual "do you want to relaunch or send a report to Apple"? I did both but when I opened iphoto again all the photos taken after july 2007 were gone :-(!!! (and that's a lot!!).
I went looking for my iphoto library - but it's also gone... I can find the folders 2005, 2006, 2007, but no 2008 or 2009 and no Data, Modified or Originals folders... (and just an iphoto icon which, when I click on it, opens iphoto)
I've tried reconstructing the library, but that hasn't changed a thing.
When a do an "image search" I can only find the photos that have remained in iphoto - not all those I've lost.
What happened? Where's my iphoto library? Have I really lost over two years of photos... and why?? Is there anything I can do or try that I haven't done?
All I did was import photos 😟
(The worst thing is I had most of it backed up on CD's - but the CD's were damaged last week due ti water damage :-((((()

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.

This is a symptom of database damage.

(and just an iphoto icon which, when I click on it, opens iphoto)

With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.

Try these in order - from best option on down...

1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.

2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.

To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:

Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.

In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'

Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop

Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.

Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.

When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.

In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. To help recovery from similar database damage in the future see the tip at the end of my signature below:

User uploaded file

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

Oh my... Followed your advice and it made things worse 😟
- Couldn't do the n° 1.
- Did the n° 2 - didn't get my photos back. Just a "rebuilt library" with the same photos (the ones that hadn't disappeared in the first place).
- Did N° 3. Moved library to desktop and launched it. It did not ask me if I wanted to create a new library. And now... There are absolutely NO photos left to be seen in the iphoto library!
There must be something somewhere though because the size of the library is shown as 12,57 Go.
Seems like I have nothing left to lose... What happened???
Please tell me there's some other (and better) way to get back those photos...

Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library' and then follow the instructions from

...Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder.

I'd love to do that... But as I've explained from the start, I don't have any folders showing. I only have one "iPhoto library" icon (12,56 Go) in the images folder.
When I click on this, I open iPhoto in which there IS of course an events folder (from which more than 2 years of photos are missing).
I really appreciate you trying to help me, but apparently it's not possible...
Maybe I should get over it and install Ilife 09 as soon as I can afford it...? Still wish I could understand what actually happened. I've been on Mac's for 20 years, so I'm not a total "Apple dork", but I've never experienced anything like this before. (Then again, suppose I should be glad about that;-) !)

It is very possible to help you, but you need to read the instructions.

And As I have said from the start

Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop

That icon (which by the way you were to have moved to the desktop), this one

only have one "iPhoto library" icon

Right Click on it and select 'Show Package Contents.

🙂 My profound excuses... (just had to google "right click" to find out what it meant - english is not my 1st language...).
Thanks to the magic "right click" I've actually found "library6.iphoto" that never showed up in search - and also some very beautiful folders with some wonderful missing photos...
I should be able to take things from here 😉
I won't do a "déclaration d'amour" on the forum, but really... THANK YOU 🙂
