new hard disk freezes when recording in Garageband or Logic

I've recently installed a 500GB hard disk, and filled up the RAM in my 2006 macbook pro.
now every time I record either in Garageband or Logic, it freezes after about 20 minutes.
this is irrespective of how many other applications are running, or how many tracks are recording.

this is the error code:
CoreAudio:
Disk is too slow. (write)
(-10002)

I've also tried running the disk utility, but no joy
can anyone help?

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.7)

Hi rplimer,

I did some digging on Google and I was able to find several threads/topics/discussions dealing with a similar error message. Consistently the answers were pointing to the HD's ability to keep up with the application's read/write needs to the HD and that upgrading to a 7200rpm drive would do the trick. The 500GB you installed, was a 5400rpm or 7200rpm drive?

Were you getting the error message with the old HD? What if you switch back to it, any change? Is there any performance issues outside of these applications?
