Bose Companion Speakers not recognized

My son has a set of Bose Companion Speakers that are not recognized with his macbook, but his brother's macbook does recognize them and they work fine. Any ideas as to why the one macbook no longer can recognize the speakers, it did at on time.

Thanks

macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.4)

If the speakers are plugged in via the analog mic or line input they will (cannot) be recognized. If they're plugged in via USB or Firewire they should be recognized. >>>Are the speakers the same exact year/model?<<<

A newer version of the operating system may recognise the speakers, an older one may not, are you both running the same OS.

You say that other speakers are recognized on this Mac.

Do you mean other USB speakers or other analog type speakers that plug into the speaker jack?

If it is the later, does your Mac have a red light showing inside the speaker jack? If so, the problem is with a switch integral to that jack. If not red light, I don't know what is wrong.

Try logging into your computer in another User Account. Create one if need be. This will help rule out the possibility of corrupt software in your main user account. It is very unlikely that a driver went bad or got removed. This is a Mac and that just doesn't happen unless someone literally removed files from the System folder or other Library folder, and you would know if you did that.

I'm having the exact same issue this gentlemen describes here. I've had the Bose Companion 3 Speakers for approx 2 years, and have had zero issues. Something happened last week where my speakers are no longer recognized as an output device. I even switched my system to my Vista PC and it was detected immediately and worked flawlessly.

Can anyone provide some suggestions on how to troubleshoot this? I don't know how to work with driver re-installs or HW device detection on Macs, and would appreciate any guidance. This is clearly something on the Mac side and not with the Bose system.

Did you upgrade ANY of the Mac's software, like move from 10.5.6 to 10.5.7?

Hi Everyone,
I have found a solution that works for me in fixing this problem. Leave your Bose USB hooked up to your computer. Open System Preferences, go to Sound, Output, and you will see that your Bose system is not listed there. Then UNPLUG the power supply to your Bose system, re-connect it to your power supply, wait a few moments and presto! you will see the Bose system listed under your Output tab.
This has worked for me every single time that the MAC has dropped the connection with the sound system.
Hope this helps you guys out.
