Making a DVD from iMovie

Is it necessary to have iDVD to make a DVD in iMovie or can I simply export and choose "To Quicktime" then select "Full Quality DVD?" Will a DVD player play this type of movie?

QuickTime doesn't make DVD's.
You need some DVD authoring application.

select "Full Quality DVD?"

The corrrect wording is "Full Quality DV". DV is what you import from a mini-DV camera.

You need some DVD authoring software, just like QuickTimeKirk wrote. iDVD or Toast are the most common.

I have Toast basic which has the option to make DVDs but what type of file do I need to export from iMovie to make a DVD-Video?

I think you can just quit iMovie and drag the iMovie project from the Finder into the Toast window.

iMovie HD projects only according to Toast help. I guess that's High Def.

The name "iMovie HD" just says you CAN use it for HD projects.

Quit iMovie.
In the Finder, open the iMovie project folder. You should see a small .mov file there. Drag THAT into Toast (or iDVD for that matter) should do the trick.
