    Thanks for the tips Lawrence.

So, it does work when directly connected (and not through a usb hub), but the question remains as to why it worked consistently prior to the upgrade to 3.0.1, and not at all now. It is one of those niggly things that just ought not happen.

I had always thought, "Wow, I'm sure glad that I've not seen that usb hub problem!" Maybe this is just Apple's way of bringing back into the common user experience fold. ;^)

Could be a coincidence, or something else changed around the time you upgraded. You can use a hub if it has its own power supply that plugs into the wall. The logic here is that a port on the computer provides power at 5 volts and 1/2 amp (or sometimes 1 amp on newer computers). If you use an unpowered hub the hub itself uses some of that 1/2 amp, and the remainder must be shared among all the connected devices. So if you have 2 devices connected that require power each gets less than 1/4 amp. Alternatively, the computer will detect a draw higher than it can supply and shut down the power pins in the USB port to protect itself. Even a powered hub can be a problem if its power supply is insufficient. Look at the wall wart or power supply to see its rating. It should say 5 volts and some number of amps. The number of amps should be at least equal to the number of ports plus 1. So a 4 port hub should have a power pack rated at 5 v and 5 amps.

The 3GS will not charge with any device that supplies 12V for charging, which is the obsolete Firewire charger on original iPods. After the first generation iPods Apple switched to USB charging, but maintained the Firewire port for backward compatibility. when the 3GS came out they dropped it, probably to make room in the case for additional hardware (supporting firewire required 2 power supplies in the phone). Hardware manufacturers were notified several years ago that support for Firewire charging would eventually be dropped. Some got the message, others didn't. Fortunately, there are adapters that will allow your 3GS to charge with these older technology devices. The adapters are available in the Apple stores and apple store online, as well as from many accessory manufacturers (Belkin, Kensington, etc).

I had the same issue and it was driving me crazy. I spent 30 minutes with an Apple tech support guy today. He had me uninstall all my Apple stuff and reinstall iTunes. The thought was that my computer needed the new USB driver instead of the older one.

After I got off the phone the problem came back.

I have since taken your guy's advice and plugged in my USB cable to the rear of my machine instead of the USB hub in the front of my case (Antec 900). 30 minutes have gone by and still no error message so this may have fixed it.

I am now receiving this message after updating to itunes 9 & iphone 3.1 update I am directly connected to my usb port in the back of computer. Running on a Dell studio xps with vista. I'm having no problems with my MB 13" Aluminum with the same sync cable. Vista is a real cruel joke....

I just got unlucky having this problem without doing any changes to my IPHONE and my computer.

I came back from work and plug in the ORIGINAL iphone cable as usual and now it can't charge and transfer data via USB.

What went wrong ? Restarted PC lots of times
