How to check "factory unlocked" status

Hey there: I want to know what methods are out there to know for certain if Im getting a LEGIT Iphone 3GS factory unlocked or just a jailbreak'd version of it.
Here in my country (Argentina), there isnt an Apple Store and you buy from sites similar to EBay that bring, according to them (sellers), Iphones 3GS Unlocked (factory).

Is it true that there is an Apple site in which you can put your Iphone serial number to check this and the Iphone status?
How can I manually know for sure? Like, restoring factory settings and trying my SIM (making a call)?

When you first connect to iTunes with a sim card installed it should come up with a message saying "Congratulations your iPhone is Unlocked", then it should say "iPhone activated". You should then be able to swap sims as required.

Yes correct, I have just bought a factory unlocked one and that's exactly what happened.

I think what Momparlet wants to know is if there is any possibility to check if the iPhone is really factory unlocked before buying one. Its pretty useless to know that you were pranked by the seller when you already paid the money...

What about the following site?

It says in the search bar "enter keywords or SERIAL NUMBER"

You guys that have an Iphone 3GS, does it work (that site if you enter the Iphone Serial Number)?

Thanks for trying.

So going back to the Iphone & Itunes, once I get home with the phone, what should I do to know if I will have problems when new firmware comes out?
