Vertical screen stripes appearing on 20" iMac

My 1.5 year old 20" iMac screen has begun to show some approximately 1 inch wide vertical light stripes. There are about ten stripes on the screen now.

Is there a remedy? Is this a common issue? I searched the archives here but did not see many other messages about this condition.

Thank you for any information.

Thomas

Den.thed and all,

Thank you for your reply.

Do you know if the stripes will stabilize as they are or is this a sign that this iMac is heading toward a greater failure? If the screen goes can I still operate this computer running to an external monitor? I read someone in else's report that to fix this problem might cost $700. I can't afford that cost at present. Hence, I am trying to understand what the situation is, how bad it could become, and what my best options are. I cannot find a message thread that addresses this particular problem.

I have the same issue on my iMac 20". It started more than a couple of months ago, and never went away. The worst part is that it has to occur after the AppleCare Plan expires. Yep, like you, I can't afford to shout out $700 to fix this.

I don't know how bad yours is, but my vertical stripes show up most against blue color.... oh well... just crappy... I haven't found a home remedy either.
