Audio Recording in Logic

Hey everyone, got a question! I have an Allen and Heath ZED 22fx mixer with an USB audio interface and I want to separate the channels into separate tracks, meaning channel one on the board be track one in the program, so micing drums in words, 1-7 having your kick,snare,tom1,tom2,floor tom and 2 overheads on separate tracks. When I do multitrack it says track 3 has no source of input but the board has 16 channels, im sure im over looking something but maybe someone can help me out?! haha its stressful having a learning curve! It records fine with one microphone in it but I cant seem to separate the channels on the board into separate tracks in the program. Anyone know the problem maybe? The board came with Sonar Calkwalk for windows, can I record in that and then put the tracks into Logic if I ever wanted to? I'm more into just recording everything into Logic itself but this is difficult, maybe I need a different interface to plug in my microphones to separate the boards channels into different tracks? HELP PLEASE! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It really depends on your budget.

If you like the concept of working with a mixer, then Mackie has some models (Onyx) that may suit you. Even A&H has a couple, but a lot more money.

Or you could look at multi-channel audio interfaces. Check out MOTU, Presonus, Focusrite Saffire, RME for example. You need at least 8 ins/8 outs. If you're thinking of drums + other instruments, then your I/O requirements will increase.

I've never used it, but on the good side, it's been around for a while, I've read good reviews and it might be fine for your purpose. It's also expandable so that you can add preamps via lightpipe in the future if you need them. Not so good is M-Audio's reputation for iffy drivers - maybe not too much of a concern as it's an established product.

It comes down to the importance you attach to having a control surface. With that budget, there are plenty of other good options which are without a control surface.

Good luck!
