Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) types weird characters

I haven't been able to narrow it down precisely but it seems to happen (only sometimes) if I switch to another program on the local machine and then back to ARD while controlling a remote machine... any attempt to type with the keyboard, results in gibberish and weird characters. I have to terminate and restart the session with the remote computer.

Any ideas what might cause this? Or how to fix it without getting out and coming back in?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

It could happen because of this: when you want to switch from ARD to another program, you press the ALT key and click on the finder (or another program in the dock) to hide the ARD window. When you switch back to ARD it thinks the ALT key is still being pressed. So any new typing is done with the ALT key modifier.
Press the ALT key once more in ARD and everything is back to normal.
