12" vs. 14" iBook

I finally took the plunge into OS X by upgrading my G3 with Panther. It works fine. Now Apple has some great deals going on, and I am thinking of getting an iBook. (I know the iMac does a lot more, but I sure would like to get at least another year of use from my G3 after going through the cost and time of upgrading it. Also, my daughter will be college bound next year, and the laptop would come in handy for her.) So...I was all set to buy the 14" iBook, until I started reading reviews which seemed to like the 12" better: better price; crisper display; lighter. Does anyone out there have a preference? And do you really think the 12" display is that much better than the 14"?

I recently got a 14" over the 12". I needed a computer right away and didn't have time to do a BTO option. Just needed the best machine for the best price out of the box and the 12" did not have a built in Super Drive and it had a smaller external hard drive.

I was worried I would not like the form factor or going iBook from TiBook (my Ti died two weeks ago), but I am absolutely over the moon with the iBook. And I really don't mind the size (and it feels lighter than my old Ti somehow). My only worry now is the grime factor as I hear they are very hard to keep clean, but I'll see what I can do.

I've since gone and compared the 12" vs. the 14" in stores and yeah, the 12" is cuter, but the difference feels really minimal to me considering I have built in DVD burning capabilities, a slightly faster processor and bus and a larger HDD right out of the box (and HDDs on iBooks are really hard to upgrade).

I bought the 14" iBook about two weeks ago and I love it to death. I compared the 12" to the 14" for months and decided that the 14" was the best for me. I like the fact that I can place my hands on the keyboard and not worry about them falling off the edge of the computer like I had happen on the 12" and that I can also hold the computer by an edge when I hold it up or anything. The 12" just seemed a bit too small for me. Sure, it would've been nice to have something that portable, but I wanted something I could use both at home on a desk and on the road.

Francesco, do not apologize, I thought you were asking about impressions, not giving yours.... I am sorry for misunderstanding you, as you said, what is big for somebody may be small for another person... Good luck with your decision...

I ordered my 14" iBook in march and haven't regretted it one bit. For me the added size doesn't make it at all more difficult to move around than anything smaller. I love making dvd's out of my pictures. My family absolutely loves it. Its a great gift idea too! They think it takes hours and hours and really its so easy. I think the screen is much easier to read and work with if and when I am stuck doing lots of homework. I just love my iBook! I think when you consider which size to get that you take a look at what you plan on doing with your computer. External DVD burners really take the portibility factor away from a laptop, but I don't think 2 extra inches of screen is really that much of an issue when portibility is concerned.

I needed a replacement for my 12" G3 600 purchased three years ago. Even maxed out with 640 MB it started getting a bit slow, especially with the HD near full most of the time. It mostly sits on a coffee table, so a 14" would be ideal. I also wanted the built-in SuperDrive and the additional processor speed, larger hard drive, and faster system bus were a plus.

I got the new 14" G4 from Amazon.com; it shipped yesterday. I was originally going to get it from a local Apple store, but it was out of stock. Then after getting ignored at CompUSA (I don't think they had it in stock anyways) I found that Amazon.com carried it, along with a $150 rebate. I'll just max out the memory with a DIMM from Crucial, and I won't look back.

I'll still have my 12" G3 600. That'll be a nice machine to take around with me.

I went for the 12" becuase of the portability. I had a 14" IBM Laptop before that weighed a ton. In reality the IBM was a desktop as I hated to carry the thing around.

Since I have a mini with SD already I didnt need the DVD burning capability either.

I saved a lot of weight and cash:)

I guess its all personal preference - rather like a two door car or a four door one.

Thank you guys for the response I was at work and wasn't able to read the posts (we're blocked from all forums) and couldn't wait to get home to see the responses. I'm definitely planning on getting the 12" then, and I'm just debating the hard drive space. I'm leaning toward upgrading to 80 GB but then I'm always second guessing myself, just out of being cheap. thanks again to everyone here at the ibook forums for all your offered opinions. thanks again.
