OS 9.1 Update fun! - Power Mac 6100

Hello people.

Im slowly (but very satisfyingly) resurrecting a supremely powerful 6100 and have installed OS9 on it - which I am trying to upgrade to 9.1.

A reference from the following article, clearly states the 9.1 updater has to be loaded from a CD for this Nubus model:

* http://support.apple.com/kb/TA20330?viewlocale=en_US*

+'The downloadable Mac OS 9.1 update available from Apple Downloads is not compatible with original (NuBus-based) Power Macintosh computers.'+

1) Why is this?
2) Could I download the appropriate 9.1 updater .smi file and burn it to CD?
3) Is it worth the upgrade to 9.1?
4) I've read that this machine will not go past 9.1 - why is this? A different MacOS ROM perhaps?

I could just pull the HDD, throw it in my B&W and install 9.1, however, where's the fun in that?

Cheers, R.

The NuBus-based Macs are quirky, in that they must be booted from OS 9.0 to install OS 9.0 or booted from OS 9.1 to install OS 9.1. I couldn't find the older TIL article referencing it (some may now be deleted), but I think that NuBus owners had to order a special OS 9 installer CD. The enhancements of OS 9.1 over 9.0 - 9.0.4 may or may not be worth the efforts required to get there. I never upgraded to 9.x on my 6100s - I left them at OS 8.6. In your case, you'd need to create a bootable OS installer disk having OS 9.1 as the boot System folder as well as the OS 9.1 Update. Transferring the 6100's SCSI hard drive to your B&W G3 would require a compatible SCSI PCI card in it. Additionally installing the OS on the hard drive while installed/connected to your B&W G3 would create a System folder that's tailored to the New World architecture and not include any of the NuBus extensions. You could add them manually to that OS build, by extracting them (check VersionTracker for "TomeViewer") from the OS 9.1 Update. The unsupported OS 9.2.1/9.2.2 is typically needed for running Classic under OS X and wouldn't benefit your 6100.
