weird: underscore won't work

I cannot type the 'underscore' character.

at first i figured it was my keyboard, but it doesn't work on my wireless either.

If i need to use it i have to copy and paste from the internet!
Yes, i know to use shift.. the dash works fine, but if i hold shift and hit the key nothing happens or i get the beep sound.
