Install OS 2.2.1 on new iPod touch

I just got a new (replacement) first gen iPod touch with OS 1.1.5. I purchased the OS update for 2.2.1 and used that before my home button went bad. Now that I have the new device, I can't figure out how to upgrade the OS. iTunes will gladly allow me to purchase 3.0, but I don't want it. Any ideas how to get the previous OS release?

Thanks.

Hi, I followed your outline and got to where i needed to get, but what's interesting is after picking the 2.2 software and restoring, a Apple window opened and said it couldn't restore; "Your iPod contains diagnostic information that may help Apple improve it's products."

What this tells me is Apple's 3.0 is preventing me from restoring to earlier firmware. I may just back up and do a full restore. I'm loosing my faith in Apple as the issues they keep creating is what I expect from Microsoft.
