can't drag mp3's from itunes library into iphone 3G S

My entire itunes library has been synced with my iphone, however, I cannot remove any of the songs that were automatically synced; when I click on the iphone library in itunes it is all grayed out. Also, I cannot drag songs into my iphone library. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong that is very basic... any ideas?

If you want to manually delete/drag items on the the iPod. You have to set to manually manage music (instead of auto sync). Otherwise, you could uncheck the items in your iTunes library so that they won't sync during Auto Sync. Be advised that unchecking items will also mean that iTunes when skip over them when playing through in iTunes. For example, if you're playing an album or playlist with an unchecked item, iTunes will skip over and play the next song.
