Macbook and Netgear Router problems

hi there-

i've just got my first mac on friday and i'm trying to connect to the internet in my house. i can connect using the ethernet cable (hence how i can write this post), but i can't connect to the wireless network.

the router is a netgear dg834g (v4), and my provider is virgin broadband. i've already tried resetting the router, and changing the wireless account and password. if i turn on the airport, it can see my network, and i can enter the password, but then it tries to connect but times out. this is as far as i can get- it's literally the last phase of the process that just won't work! i've tried to call virgin, but they're a bit clueless. i've read a lot online about problems with macbooks and the netgear router, but so far i haven't come across a solution.

any help greatly appreciated!

Only for communication purposes I want to clarify... You disabled all security on both the Mac and on the router?
If so then you could try to reset the SMC, may not fix it but worth a shot!

Can you log into the router through web browser?

Something else you could try is to log into router and disable DHCP and set it up for manual IP address. This can be a little confusing depending on the router and your level of networking experience. So you would set up the router with manual address and then give Macbook an address manually.

It sounds like you may not be getting a TCP/IP address assigned to the airport side of your Macbook. Make sure that your wireless settings in network preferences is set up for DHCP. I might also suggest not using encryption of any sort until you actually make a connection to the internet. Once you can get online then go back and set up the encryption securities. This may help you in the troubleshooting.
