I'm a little puzzled by the question. I'm typing on my 14" iBook G4 1.42 (M9948LL/A) right now, and there's a rectangular key that says "delete" right at the upper right-hand corner below the eject/F12 key and above the "\" key. The same goes for my iBook G3 600 (M6497LL/A) with the translucent keyboard. On my Apple USB keyboard (M9034LL/A), the "delete" key is between "F13" and "\".
The currrent iBook technical specs on the Apple website has a nice shot of the keyboard. That certainly looks like a "delete" key.

Now that I think about it, perhaps you're thinking of the Apple "delete" key as what is "backspace" on a standard IBM keyboard layout. The instructions given are correct.
