Bootcamp + Heat problems?

I've spoken with many representatives before concerning this issue and they all point it at a driver issue, so can someone clear this up for me?

When running under bootcamp Windows XP and playing games, it runs fine until it starts to lag every 30 seconds or so. Every 30 seconds the computer just slows down for about 3 seconds making the game unplayable.

What I have done/found out:
1. This normally happens when the temperature hits past 80c
2. I've tried 3 different installs of windows
3. I've seen the same problem on 2 of my friends macs (they have the same version)
4. After closing the game, the temperature will drop, but the lag will still occur -> I would view task manager and cpu usage and i would see that every time the lag occurs, the cpu usage jumps to around 25% (Even with most of my applications closed).
5. This never occurs if i use the laptop normally and don't play games
6. This lag has never happened on the Mac OS.
7. If i restart, let the temperature drop, and start playing again, this problem will happen again within 30 minutes.

Like i said before, apple has been saying that this is a 'driver issue' but i've tried different drivers, and seen this problem on other macs in bootcamp. I play on my irain, which does not block the airflow.

Anyone have a similar problem or a solution?

sorry i forgot to add that this set up has a 8600m video card. i remember apple saying that this card might be faulty, but representatives say that they cant help me out if this problem is only happening on windows and not on mac... ran a hardware test (by holding D at startup) and says no problems whatsoever.

On a side note, this problem happened within the first week i bought this mac (about 1/2 a year ago)

Thanks for any help

The computer is in warranty so take it to an Apple service center and have them check it out. If there's a hardware problem we cannot help you fix it.

Windows does not have the capability of controlling the Mac's fans which causes the computer to heat up more than normal especially if playing games which tax both the CPU and GPU.

You can try using Input Remapper to control the speed of the fans while using Windows to see if that helps. Alternatively, you can use SMCFanControl - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - to set the fans to a higher speed before booting into Windows.

Apple continues to say that this is a driver issue. I've called apple support and even talked to some representatives at the apple store. If they say that it's a driver issue, what solutions do i have? If i tell them that windows cannot control the fans properly, they may just say that they do not support windows after the initial installation.

(btw i've tried imput remapper and all it does is freeze up my pc)

i can try to give smcfancontrol a try, but having to start my pc in macmode and restarting into windows every time seems like a pain...

There are no drivers from Apple other than the ones provided on your OS X Installer Disc One. There is an Apple Boot Camp 2.1 updater but I believe what came with your computer already is updated.

Nvidia does distribute their own Catalyst drivers, but I have no idea if they support the GPU in your model.

Beyond this you could buy a PC to play games as this seems to be your main use of the Mac.

Im on the road a lot, so a desktop is out of the question for me. I've tried different drivers already (nvidia, laptopvideo2go). If the fans arent keeping up in windows like you claim, what is causing the cpu usage to jump from 5% to 25% at 30 second intervals when all my applications are turned off and the temperature is lowered?

Do you think apple would take a look at this problem if I tell them that the fans arent keeping up? -_-.

I cannot tell you why there is excessive CPU activity in Windows. That would definitely be a Windows related problem. Once booted into Windows there is no OS X involvement with the computer. Your Windows installation relies exclusively on what Windows installs except for the Boot Camp hardware drivers you install from the OS X Installer DVD. Those drivers are the interface between Windows and the Mac's hardware. Since Windows does not support any fan control, and since there is no Windows fan control software that works with the Mac's hardware, the only way to control it is either to use Input Remapper in Windows or SMCFanControl for OS X.

Although you can take the computer in for service, Apple will not provide any Windows tech support other than running Boot Camp and getting Windows installed via Boot Camp. The issue of lack of fan control in Windows is well known but beyond Apple's control.

If Input Remapper isn't working for you then perhaps it's an incompatibility problem with either the version of Windows or the version of Input Remapper you are using. You could try upgrading to Vista or reinstalling XP. You may wish to avoid Windows 7 for now since it's not supported by Apple and there are no fully compatible drivers on the OS X Installer DVD.

As for being on the road you could get a PC laptop. There are many that are suitable for high-end game playing. They will be bulkier and heavier than the MBP given the need to use faster GPUs that require bigger cooling systems. Most of them run pretty hot as well, so I hear.
