PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K06

does anyone know where i can get the firmware for the PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K06. the drive came oem with my imac.

i used the drive about 10 times only and it shows up fine in the apple system profiler --i'm sure it's just a software problem.

iMac6,1, Mac OS X (10.5.7), Intel Core 2 Duo (Intel 80486)

hey,

first off i'd like to thank Kenichi Watanabe and Templeton Peck for responding to my post. i really do appreciate that.

sorry about not being more specific as to the problem i am having with my PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K06 drive. the problem is the drive rejects cds and dvds-- blanks, commercial, the ones that came with my computer, etc. When i put any disc into the the drive i can hear it spin around and stop a few times, then eventually eject it after about 30 seconds.

to be more specific, when i do this:

=======HOW TO CREATE BOOTABLE DVD=======
[1] Download the TechTool Pro DVD dmg from here:
http://download.macupdate.com/techtoolpro_504dvd.dmg
[2] Launch Apple's Disk Utility.
[3] Select the TechTool Pro 5 DVD "dmg" that appears in the list. (If it does not appear,
drag and drop the "dmg" file into the Disk Utility window).
[4] Insert a blank DVD into the DVD drive.
[5] Select the "Burn" option in Disk Utility.

the drive spins and stops a few times, ejects the dvd, and i get a window saying this: Unable to burn "techtool prodvd.dmg". (The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry.) <--that's verbatim.

that's the closest i can come to getting an error code. i've been a mac user all my life, so i know my way around an apple probably a little more than most. but being a mac user all my life and never have used a windows pc, i don't know much about technical stuff--i do graphic design. and i'm used to being able to take my computer apart when things go wrong if need be-- no more imacs for me.

in any case it won't even play a commercial cd.

i was thinking if someone was really smart and knew exactly what to do, i could mount the leopard disk image--i got it on my computer in dmg-- and use Pacifist to reinstall the software mac osx 10.5 needs to make the dvd drive work.

i don't use discs much anymore but want to be able to install snow leopard when it comes out.

any help would be appreciated,

jim

Make sure you have shut down (powered off) the iMac since this problem was noticed, then restarted.

Try this next. Go to System Preferences +CDs & DVDs+ pane. Change something on that pane. For example, change +When you insert a music CD+ to ignore. Then insert a music CD. It should mount the CD without doing anything else, but the disc should not be ejected. If that works, you can change it back the previous setting, such as *Open iTunes*. Try it again and see if it opens iTunes. If that work, try other types of discs to see if they now work.

If that does not help either, you can try resetting PRAM

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379

and then use this reset SMC procedure to disconnect the iMac from power and re-connect it.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543

That might reset the optical drive. When you re-plug the power cord, have all peripherals (USB, FireWire, etc.) disconnected except for the standard USB keyboard/mouse. Start it up and try inserting a disc. If that works, connect your peripherals one by one and note if it stops working at any point.

Hi Jim

Reset the [SMC|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543], then boot with a [PRAM and NVRAM|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379] reset.

Then if the drive still spits out everything it's probably busted and needs to be replaced.

Options:
1. Take it in to your local Apple Store or Apple Service provider without Apple Care and pay out the bottom to have it replaced.
2. Google Search: for a new super drive and some DIY's, there are bunch of great DIY articles and YouTube videos out there for cracking open the different Intel iMacs.
3. Google search: OWC or LaCie and pickup and External DVD drive.

hey thanks heaps for the great ideas Kenichi Watanabe and den.thed. I did zap the pram before i made my original post but didn't try the other things you each suggested. all your information i have saved and will try it tonight when i get home. i'll post back the outcome in a day or two.

i was at my wits end i know that, and now i have great ideas to try and alternatives if nothing works--gotta love apple discussions groups 🙂
