Error using Target Disk Mode

Hi everybody, it's the first time I write on this support forum and it's too much time I dont' write in English..so i'll try to explain better I can my problem.

A few days ago I tried to install Windows on my Imac (bought on February 2009) using BootCamp: unfortunately the cd I used wasn't with Service Pack 2, so my mac is now without operative system: no Mac os and no Windows.

I contacted Apple Customer Care, and they advised to me to use the FireWire target disk mode to recover my files and then initailize to restore the Os.

But...today I've try to set up the Target Disk Mode with a FireWire cable and a friend of mine's MacBook Air but nothing: "You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read". Why? Is the damage so wide, and my files are now lost?

iMac 20", Mac OS X (10.5.4)

Are you sure it was a macbook air? A macbook air does not have a firewire port so you cannot use target disk mode with it.

Try booting from your install DVD and in the utilities menu choose Disk Utility and try repair the disk, if that does not work you may need to use software such as DiskWarrior from Alsoft to try and repair the disk.

The damage may have been done force shutting down your mac, you may have caused directory structure damage to your hard drive.

Unfortunately this type of work is not covered by Protection Plan, and the cost is too high for me. The only thing I can do now is Initialize, and lose my files.

But before to do this procedure, I would like try another time the Target Disk Mode: I found this ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2528?viewlocale=en_US) in the Apple Site, perhaps is this the problema I had today?

And what about other type of files migration?
