Windows 7 and Time Capsule

Hi guys,

I just got my Time Capsule and it was up and running in no time. I'm having the following problem:

I can see, read and write small files to the Time Capsule disk, but when I try to copy a large file (175MB) it just refuses. I get an error:

There is a problem accessing T:\
Make sure you are connected to the network and try again

I tried suggestions mentioned in other and this forum: change the LAN Manager authentication level and disable the 128-bit requirement, but still the same thing.

My Mac mini mounts, reads and writes fine via Windows 7. Please help me out.

P.S.
- I have the final (MSDNAA) version of Windows 7
- I have the most recent Time Capsule update (7.4.2)
- There is a Time Capsule password on it, which is the same as my Windows password
- The workgroup is on both systems 'WORKGROUP'

I can confirm that this doesnt fix the problem in all cases too.

I have read and understood the technet article ( http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc960646.aspx) and found that turning NTLMv2 off completely doesnt work either.

The TC simply does not work reliably with windows 7.

Looks like win/mac home setups are gong to be painful for the coming months whilst this gets sorted. Either that or I'll flick a coin and junk either the Dell or the TC.

I can confirm that the newer Time Capsule shipping with firmware 7.5 has exactly the same problem, and also does not work well with Windows 7. Errors about file no longer being available, and unknown handle cropping up all the time. It works perfectly on the same network with Windows XP.

Apple - please fix urgently!

I guess that's fine as a workaround, although not sure how you'd copy the file back again from the TC to a Windows 7 PC.

But seriously, even if it is possible to use the TC by this tortured method, it's hardly elegant and the TC does not come across a usable product for Windows 7 users. I bought this product, because Apple products are supposed to be easy to use, without lots of fiddling around, but am feeling rather disappointed.

Can someone from Apple let us know when this bug will be fixed?

still dont work, this only allows you to see the shares etc but when you try to copy files using windows 7 it gives you an error and wont copy the files.

This is not a fix for this

Sorry it didn't fix it for you. Mine's working fine now, so maybe my earlier post will help at least some folks with this issue. Since doing the fix I posted, I'm able to transfer files of any size to and from the Time Capsule with both laptops, using Windows 7 and Snow Leopard. Good luck to all.

I found this on the net and it works great for our PCs:
I only needed to make the first change, Now Apple needs to com up with a fix so we can have the security back.

Open the Local Security Policy MMC applet, you can do this by searching for Security in the start menu or from the command prompt by typing:
%windir%\system32\secpol.msc /s
Once there open the Local Policies folder, then the Security Options view. From there find “Network security: LAN Manager authentication level” – you will probably find this is set to “Send NTLMv2 response only” – *change this to “Send LM & NTLM – use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated*” – this does lower your security level but is pretty much required to work with anything pre-vista.
Further down you should see “Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) clients” – you may have to make sure that both require boxes there are unchecked as well.

It's hard say that this is an Apple's fault. With older Microsoft OS TC works perfectly, with Windows 7 no. I think 7 is unable to manage the write on TC's filesystem. So i think: why Apple must correct a Microsoft incapacity? Furthermore can Apple correct this kind of problem?

Apple don't have to do anything, but if they don't want lots of time capsules purchased by Windows 7 users to be returned (or want to advertise TC as supporting Windows 7), they will probably decide to make TC support Windows 7 sooner or later. I'm just hoping it's sooner, so I can avoid the need to return my TC.

"Apple don't have to do anything"

I disagree, I had the same problems with Windows Vista and the TC before installing Windows 7. Apple is clearly advertising compatibility with Windows Vista at the moment as well as "PC" compatibility. If you buy any new "PC" more than likely it will be equipped with Windows 7. Misleading? This is why I disagree. Either update the firmware with a "PC" compatible version or CLEARLY indicate that this product is NOT "PC" compatible. Nowhere have I found that Microsoft advertises that their products are compatible with the Apple TC, why would they? It's not there responsibility.

I have the same kind of problem but only with the offline files: the sync can't access the TC to syncronise. And I got no problem when I was on XP.
When the offline files is disconected in the pc, I got no problem to write, read or transfer.
The error message on my pc : "the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process".
Got any way to tweak that?
Thanks..

I think I solved it!

I was also frustrated with the problem of continuous disconnects between Win7 premium 64bit and my dualband TC. I've set the registry LMcompatibilitylevel as described above but that didn't help. Seeing multiple logins in the TC log, I guessed maybe some security measure is kicking in on the TC or windows. I guessed that it could be a problem with the time and region settings frustrating the session timeouts or something. Then I changed my regional settings from US to the correct one, the netherlands. That didn't help.

Changing the language for non-Unicode programs in the adminstrative tab of the region and language control panel to Dutch and then restarting fixed it! Now the connection to my TC is rock solid, with only a single login in the TC log!

I reccomend that you also set these regional options correctly (at least the same value as your TC). Please report if this also helps for you and maybe this frustrating issue can be erased from our memory!
