Ok - I loyaly use Safari, and have since I became a mac user about 10 months ago. However, the past two weeks, I am getting SICK of safari crashing every day. Literally, at least once a day it just crashes while I am surfing through sites...most usually espn.com. Why is this happening? Is it a Safari update that apple has to release? Is it something that I should do to my iBook (I've erase the CACHE very often)?!? Help, I cant browse!

Sorry to hear about your problems, I don't know about why this would be happening but you could always try downloading firefox and giving it a go, its a pretty good browser, you may have more joy with it.
Thanks Darran - I do know about Firefox, etc...but I just would rather use Safari. I know people are having trouble with it since 10.4.2 came out. There was also a seperate Java update that might be the problem...I just want to hear from some of the "pro" users on this forum and see if there is anything I can do to my machine, or if its a "common" problem and I just have to wait for an update.
Umm that is very strange, that has never really happened to me. What else are you doing while surfing the internet? I look at ESPN all the time, I love the play by play that they have. Im curious to what is going on. I'll try to help you out(friends are apple geniuses).

I experienced a problem like that a while back on my imac G5. The problem was caused by an updater (on Software Update). The solution was to re download the updater and reinstall. If you have recently updated your system software I recommend that you download the standalone installer and reinstall. Don't forget to repair your permissions and optimize you system before you install. I use OnyXto do this and I have yet to expeirence a conflict when doing an update. MacJanitor or Cocktail are also recommended for maintenance of you HD and system.
PS you only need on of the maintenance apps unless you do it manually

Hey Jon,
It just happens when i am surfing...for example, just checking out scores, etc, and then all of a sudden it will just quite. It asks me to send a report to apple, which i do, and then i just hit "reopen" and continue on my way. I usually have mail open, iTunes, and maybe iChat. Thats about it. I just reset Safari for the first time in like three months...so maybe that will clean something out? Also - i've just seen on the forums that there might be a new safari update coming out, that might address the issue.

Where can i get MacJanitor...people always bring that one up...
Ya that might be it also always check you updates, but I suggest not updating all the time because I found they sometimes are like betas where they are buggy.

b THIS IS A WARNING FOR EVERYONE, after thinking for awhile becareful when you download widgets because they are a perfect gateway for viruses for Macs. Basically they can open any program (INCLUDING Terminal) and erase anything or everything on your computer! Macs aren't safe from viruses, just windows ones. Good luck Be smart.

This is a link that I wished I had read before I Archive and Install more than once
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302350
I also downloaded Firefox but did not read the instructions on how to install it
on the first launch -panic crash.
I still love Apple's Safari after years with the other browsers.

Definitely switch to firefox. (and make sure and go into the safari preferences and change your default browser to firefox)
Once you have it installed, use these settings to increase page-loading speed within firefox:
In firefox, type "about:config" in the address bar to bring up the configuration editor.
Adjust these values accordingly. For boolean types just doubling clicking will switch them. For integers, you will be prompted to enter a value. Note that these are meant for broadband users.
browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs true
network.http.max-connections 48
network.http.max-connections-per-server 16
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy 8
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server 4
network.http.pipelining true
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests 100
network.http.proxy.pipelining true
network.http.request.timeout 300
Finally, you need to add in a variable to the list. In order to do so, right click and select "new --> integer". A menu will popup asking for you to enter the name of this integer. Enter "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This tells the fox not to wait on displaying the data that it has received from the server.
Now, just close out that window and enjoy your new-found speed!

Yeah, I"m having the saame problem with ESPN. But it seems to be all the browsers - Safari, Firefox, Opera, and IE (if I remember) all crashed doing the same thing. So I'm not sure it was a Safari thing. Maybe something else.
Alright I think I have a great way of speeding it up. You need to Reset Safari. By resetting Safari you are getting rid of all the cookies, autofill applications, history, and so on. After resetting it, its like the way Safari was when you bought it. This is the best thing that I can think of. I am betting ESPN has a ton of cookies which could possibly be slowing it down. In order to reset your Safari you need to:
b Open Safari - Click on Safari menu - Click Reset Safari
I believe that will work, Safari is the best web browser I have ever used. I hope this helps
Jon
PS This is also a great/must thing to do when you sell/give you computer to someone.

Hi,
You've upgraded to Tiger since new. If you check your hard drive, be sure to never use a version of "Disk Utility" that is pre-Tiger.

try Camino. it's a great browser for my mac mini. i tried safari but didn't like it. i use firefox om my pc at work.
I don't get why you guys dont like Safari, Safari is the best web browser I've ever used. I don't get any annoying popups or anything like that. The security is one of the best if not the best. I just don't get whats wrong with it...?

I love Safari. For whatever reason Safari just crashes several times a day now.
I can not point to when it started. I am always updating to the latest software
update. I should keep a log of updates and when trouble starts.
Safari did not always crash like this.
