iBook user - getting SICK of Safari

Ok - I loyaly use Safari, and have since I became a mac user about 10 months ago. However, the past two weeks, I am getting SICK of safari crashing every day. Literally, at least once a day it just crashes while I am surfing through sites...most usually espn.com. Why is this happening? Is it a Safari update that apple has to release? Is it something that I should do to my iBook (I've erase the CACHE very often)?!? Help, I cant browse!

Thanks Darran - I do know about Firefox, etc...but I just would rather use Safari. I know people are having trouble with it since 10.4.2 came out. There was also a seperate Java update that might be the problem...I just want to hear from some of the "pro" users on this forum and see if there is anything I can do to my machine, or if its a "common" problem and I just have to wait for an update.

I experienced a problem like that a while back on my imac G5. The problem was caused by an updater (on Software Update). The solution was to re download the updater and reinstall. If you have recently updated your system software I recommend that you download the standalone installer and reinstall. Don't forget to repair your permissions and optimize you system before you install. I use OnyXto do this and I have yet to expeirence a conflict when doing an update. MacJanitor or Cocktail are also recommended for maintenance of you HD and system.

PS you only need on of the maintenance apps unless you do it manually

Hey Jon,

It just happens when i am surfing...for example, just checking out scores, etc, and then all of a sudden it will just quite. It asks me to send a report to apple, which i do, and then i just hit "reopen" and continue on my way. I usually have mail open, iTunes, and maybe iChat. Thats about it. I just reset Safari for the first time in like three months...so maybe that will clean something out? Also - i've just seen on the forums that there might be a new safari update coming out, that might address the issue.

Ya that might be it also always check you updates, but I suggest not updating all the time because I found they sometimes are like betas where they are buggy.

b THIS IS A WARNING FOR EVERYONE, after thinking for awhile becareful when you download widgets because they are a perfect gateway for viruses for Macs. Basically they can open any program (INCLUDING Terminal) and erase anything or everything on your computer! Macs aren't safe from viruses, just windows ones. Good luck Be smart.

Definitely switch to firefox. (and make sure and go into the safari preferences and change your default browser to firefox)

Once you have it installed, use these settings to increase page-loading speed within firefox:

In firefox, type "about:config" in the address bar to bring up the configuration editor.
Adjust these values accordingly. For boolean types just doubling clicking will switch them. For integers, you will be prompted to enter a value. Note that these are meant for broadband users.

browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs – true
network.http.max-connections – 48
network.http.max-connections-per-server – 16
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy – 8
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server – 4
network.http.pipelining – true
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests – 100
network.http.proxy.pipelining – true
network.http.request.timeout – 300

Finally, you need to add in a variable to the list. In order to do so, right click and select "new --> integer". A menu will popup asking for you to enter the name of this integer. Enter "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This tells the fox not to wait on displaying the data that it has received from the server.
Now, just close out that window and enjoy your new-found speed!

Alright I think I have a great way of speeding it up. You need to Reset Safari. By resetting Safari you are getting rid of all the cookies, autofill applications, history, and so on. After resetting it, its like the way Safari was when you bought it. This is the best thing that I can think of. I am betting ESPN has a ton of cookies which could possibly be slowing it down. In order to reset your Safari you need to:

b Open Safari - Click on Safari menu - Click Reset Safari

I believe that will work, Safari is the best web browser I have ever used. I hope this helps

Jon

PS This is also a great/must thing to do when you sell/give you computer to someone.
