serial number confidentiality?

I am enquiring with an online store about buying a replacement part (a new external casing part for my ibook) the vendor is asking for my serial number of my machine. I am sure I am just being silly. But if I buy then I will also be supplying them my name and address etc.,
Is your serial number ok to give out? Its what I use when I contact apple for support etc. I have searched but cannot find an answer to this question.

If the person/company from which you are ordering the part is an Apple Certified Technican or Certified Service Provider, then it is safe to give out. Ask them to show you their certification. However, if it is just some joe-shmow, then there is pretty much no reason he would need your serial number, nor would he have the resources to do anything with it. (You need the Apple Service Software to research serial numbers.) Hope this helps.

Dear Mike,
Thank you for your answer to what I am increasing feeling is a stupid question. I guess I just think that my application serial numbers are confidential and therefore so is my computer number.
The site states (WAY down in the small print of RETURNS, under DISCLAIMERS AND NOTICES) that it is an authorized Apple reseller. I could not find them on the apple site (you can't search by name and I only had a city and state) but eventually found it on theirs after an hour of searching on both. Thank you for indulging my paranoia.
