USB headset mic not working

I recently bought a Sennheiser headet (PC 156 USB) to use with my macbook. The output works just fine, but I cannot get the mic on the headset to work at all. I have tried plugging it in as "USB" and into the "line in" (but I have no preamp, which is why I purchased the USB to begin with). Sometimes I get a buzz, but that's it.

I also own a USB external mic (cheapo Rocketfish) which works great.

I have tried switching all the settings on both the sound preferences as well as my sound programs (ventrilo and garage band). I have also tried muting and unmuting the sound out in sound preferences. None of this has had any effect. I am running OS 10.5.7.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not finding a whole lot about this headset.

It seems that it has the usual mic & headphone jack connectors, and then a USB adapter as well--is that right? I don't see anything that says it works with OS X, so you may be out of luck. Have you tried it on a PC to make sure the headset is in good working condition?

You might want to play around in the Audio MIDI setup (Applications>Utilities) to see if the mic is recognized there.

You might try creating an "Aggregate" device. (use USB connection)
In Utilities there is Audio/MIDI Setup, launch that and have the Audio tab selected, under the menu selection "Audio" you will find the Aggregate device editor. What's interesting is that somewhere around 10,5,6 OSX changed some audio devices from being seen as a single unit (mic & headphone) to two separate units. Mic as input, headphones as output.

Hopefully that's the case for your Sennheiser headset.

In the aggregate device editor you will see all available audio inputs and outputs. If your Sennheiser's show up under both input and output create a new aggregate device and add both input and output, set output as the clock master, name the new aggregate device you've created and then select it as the audio device for any application you wish to use it in.
