Help with error message: Cannot install hardware

I just received a 3gs iPhone as a gift and am new to Apple in general. While following the instructions that came with the phone, when I connect the phone to my computer via USB, I receive an error message:
Cannot install hardware.
There was a problem installing this hardware
Apple Mobile Device USB Driver
An error occurred during the installation of the device
The system cannot find the file specified.
Spent over an hour with tech support, uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes, then tried creating a new user account and turning of the firewall. They could not fix the problem.
Has anyone else ran into this problem and was able to resolve it?
Many thanks.
