HDD upgrade on Mac Book Pro - Which HDD?

My 2¢ - go with the Seagate Momentus 500GB 7200 drive, it's fast, pretty quiet (slightly more vibration than the original) and doesn't have much impact on battery life.

Any of those will be fine. Seagate offers a longer warranty. Choose one on the basis of price, warranty, size (capacity) and rotational speed.

Heat is not an issue. A 7200RPM drive generates very little or no more heat than a 5400RPM drive, and will shorten your run time on a battery charge by no more than 5%.

I was torn between those 3 as well and just picked up the 500GB Seagate Momentus.

One question that comes to mind now is whether the replacement drive will negate my mbp's driveguard safety mechanism at all.

So all this talk about hdd issues/beeping/etc are not problems with the 500gb 7200 seagate. Or is it best to get a 320gb 7200 drive?

The folks participating in this discussion don't address another possible issue. Following the release of Apple's latest firmware update for MBP, many users reported serious performance issues with their upgraded hard drives. To my knowledge, this problem has yet to be solved.

I'm 0 for 3 with the seagate drives. As noted at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2049659 these drives don't appear to be very trustworthy. Even the non-G drives have had reports of problems.

Did you install the eSATA firmware update? If so, before or after installing the upgraded hard drive?
