WX7 Wind Controller Pitch Bend w/External synth

It's nice to see postings from wind control players. I need some help.

I have a Yamaha WX7 midi wind controller that I perform with and have done so for 22 years and have it set up to my taste.

I have it connected to an M-audio FW410 which then goes to my MBP laptop (OSX 10.5.7). The WX7 is being used for playing a Yamaha VL70 external module and a Native Instruments FM8 softsynth. The FM8 plays as expected, however with the midi data going through Mainstage 2 before the VL70, the VL70 is responding to pitch bend data in odd ways. I have the WX7 in what is referred as tight lip mode which emulates the embouchure a sax player would use. In that mode the WX7 initially (before tightening the mouth) transmits pitch bend data that is below the actual pitch and you tighten your mouth to get to the correct in tune pitch and then further tightening of your mouth raises the pitch which gives you the ability to do vibrato.

With Mainstage 2, as I'm relaxing the jaw from a tight position, the VL70 will jump to a note a minor third up. After freaking out and realizing the pitch bend data was the culprit I pushed the midi thru button on the FW410 and all is well...except I don't want to have to push that button all the time.

I put a PB control in the layout workspace and manually moved the mouthpiece pitch bender on the WX7 for midi learn, (I don't use the rocker switch pitch bender), but the response is awkward.

I have a few ideas that might work.

Does any WX7 or WX5 users have any similar problems?
Is there a MS2 control that emulates a midi thru for the entire external instrument?
Is there a way to pass thru the PB data straight to the VL70 so MS doesn't process it?
Is there a way to fix this in the PB parameter box?

My Mainstage 2 Concert has 4 softsynths being played by a M-audio Axiom 61 and then I've placed the WX7 patches in a separate set.

Thanks for any help

I have the exact same problem with my EWI 4000s and VL70m. I have tried mapping an object, etc. and no luck ... Pitchbend ends up being very flaky in this setup. What I have done in the meantime is to just filter pitchbend going to the VL70m so I don't have to worry about it messing up the pitch. But it's a shame since pitchbend is used a fair amount for the realism of some of those patches.

You can try create a knob and assigning it to the incoming pitch bend midi message, and then in the patch with the external instrument channel strip, create a mapping directly to midi > pitch bend in the external instrument channel strip. I don't know if that actually gets around the issue, but maybe it will trick MainStage into working the way you want it to?

If you want to block MainStage from processing pitch bend data, all you need to do is to create an object in the workspace, assign the object to pitch bend that is coming in, and then set the "MIDI thru" drop down in the inspector for the object along the left side to "Do not pass through"

I Also use a wind controller (AKAI 4000s) but the problem doesn't seem to be related to the type of controller. Any of my keyboards routed to a MIDI synth through MainStage causes strange results when PB is applied. In my case using PB would cause the notes to jump an octave only at the top of the PB range and then go down a second below the original pitch when released. Once there I can't get it to return to the original pitch without restarting my synths. The only solution I have is to filter PB on the properties page of the miid channel strip which really *****. This is a bug that Apple needs to fix. I have already sent this as an issue. Everyone should do the same so Apple makes it a priority to fix.
