Treat zip files as folders?

Hello,

is it possible to make the Finder treat zip files like folders just like Windows XP's Explorer does? I really miss that feature!

What I mean is what's explained in Wikipedia as "a ZIP file is typically presented as a directory or folder, so that files are copied into and out of it in the same manner as any other folder and the compression is handled in a way largely transparent to the user. This has eliminated the need to learn a specialized tool and interface for file archival and compression."

More information:

1 You can work with a compressed folder and the files or programs it contains just as you would with an uncompressed folder. The zip file would not get uncompressed by Windows when entered, just the file list is read.

2 Once you have created a compressed folder (identified by the zipper on the folder icon), you can compress files, programs, or other folders by dragging them to it. You can open files directly from compressed folders, or you can extract files before opening them.

3 Zipped compressed files and folders can be moved to any drive or folder on your computer, the Internet, or your network, and they are compatible with other file compression programs. You can also share Zip files with other users.

4 You can protect zipped compressed folders with a password. This protects your data if you save it in a shared network folder, attach it to an e-mail message, or move it between work and home on floppy disks.

I know BomArchiveHelper, BetterZip and Stuffit (plus Stuffit mount zip option using MacFUSE...) but they don't match my needs.

Does anyone know a program, kext or plugin or anything that enables Finder to read ZIP files as folders?

A Google search didn't bring up much, and I don't have time to try this right now, but here's an older link that might help--keep in mind that Leopard has been updated since this article was written, so the plugin might not work. I'd also recommend having your important data backed up, just in case something goes wrong:

Again, use at your own risk.

Thank you all for your help! 🙂

I already have the QuickLook plugin installed and it helped a bit in the past.

Maybe I should give more information about what I already tried:

1 BomArchiveHelper / BetterZip / other Zip programs (This is not what I want. It works but delivers no integration so far.)

2 QuickLook plugin (This helps a bit but it lacks the ability to be "interactive")

3 Stuffit (The new version delivers a macFUSE plugin that enables you to achieve some portion of the "zip folder" functionality but you have to mount the zip file manually.)

I'm investigating further possibilities such as the combination of automount and fuse-zip ( http://code.google.com/p/fuse-zip). Any other ideas are welcome. 🙂
